Mark Calendars for Makeover Montgomery 2 | Moving Forward Montgomery 

Registration Now Open 

 

Following the success of the original Makeover Montgomery conference in 2011, the National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education, the Montgomery County Planning Department and the Urban Studies and Planning Program at the University of Maryland have joined forces again to host Makeover Montgomery 2 | Moving Forward Montgomery (MM2). The three-day event is happening May 8-10, 2014 and is open to residents, business owners and anyone with an interest in moving their community forward. Register now

Attend the Upcoming Zoning Rewrite Open Houses    

Public invited to learn more about the proposed zoning changes, new interactive maps

 
Planners have rewritten the Zoning Code to modernize antiquated, redundant zoning regulations and create new tools to help achieve goals in community plans. Attend an open house to continue the dialogue about proposed zoning changes. Staff will be on hand with interactive maps to help answer questions. Learn more 

 

Attend the Relaunch of the Greater Lyttonsville Plan

Community invited to re-engage and learn about existing conditions for Greater Lyttonsville


The Lyttonsville community is invited to attend the relaunch meeting for the Greater Lyttonsville Plan. The family-friendly meeting is intended to engage the community and present existing conditions that will form the foundation for transforming the heart of Greater Lyttonsville. All residents and business owners are invited to attend on the evening of Tuesday, May 6 at the Gwendolyn E. Coffield Center (2450 Lyttonsville Road, Silver Spring, MD). More info

Attend the Next Aspen Hill Meeting - May 13

The 3rd and final community meeting for the Aspen Hill Minor Master Plan amendment is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13th at 6:30 pm at the Aspen Hill public library.  Staff draft recommendations will be presented for the community's feedback.

Unearthing the Jackson Homestead

The public is invited to a free presentation from Montgomery Parks and URS Corporation on findings from the Jackson Homestead site, a unique 19th century / early 20th century African American site that was excavated as a mitigation activity for ICC.

Hyattstown Mill Arts Project Opening Reception for Art Exhibition

Join the Hyattstown Mill Arts Project FREE opening reception for the annual membership exhibition. Most of the artists will attend.

Bike To Work on Friday, May 16

Montgomery County, Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association invite you to join more than 10,000 area commuters for a celebration of bicycling as a fun and healthy way to get to work on Bike To Work Day, Friday, May 16, 2014! 

 

Attend one of 79 pit stops throughout D.C., Maryland and Virginia for refreshments and be entered into a raffle for bicycles and other prizes. Free T-shirts are available at pit stops to the first 14,000 who register and attend. There will be a raffle drawing for a bicycle at each of the above pit stops. Carroll Knolls Local Park Opening

Join us Saturday, April 26 from 11a.m. - 1p.m. to celebrate Montgomery Parks' newest parks, Carroll Knolls Local Park. This new urban park, located on Georgia Avenue at the intersection of Evans Parkway provides much needed green space for the community. Join us for a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by games for children, demonstrations with a Parks' naturalist and Meet our Tree Stewards!

Volunteer Opportunities

 

Montgomery Parks is looking for both special event and long-term volunteers. Go to www.ParksVolunteers.org, click on Search and Apply for Volunteer Opportunities, then click on the category that interests you. Here are some examples of the opportunities we have open: 
  • NNI Removal Events, Various locations and dates, help us rid the park trees of vines and other Non-Native Invasives that are taking over!
  • Tree Stewards, Various parks - commit to at least one year of quarterly park visits.  Help us keep an eye on our most valuable resource in parks, our trees! 
  • Earth Month! Various parks. April is Earth Month, and we are beginning to schedule several large park cleanups. 
  • Nature and Summer Camp Counselor Opportunities, Feeling cabin fever?  Thinking about summer?  Here are some volunteer opportunities to help with that!

Our online tool will make HOA organization email addresses available to web users seeking to notify residents about pending development or other issues. We rely on homeowners and civic organizations to help spread the word about development applications and planning initiatives. Homeowner's association leaders may want to update your organizational contact information to a generic 'mygroup@gmail.com' and update your contact information
