Some Info from DSNY
Many business owners and managers are unaware of the sanitation violations they can accumulate. So, NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has put together a great and informative flyer explaining how businesses can successfully avoid some of the more common sanitation violations around the city. Our organization and our Clean Team work very closely with DSNY year round keeping our district clean, frequently encountering certain violations. Most importantly, all businesses must hire private carting companies for collection and disposal service, properly package and place material out for collection and keep their area clean, as well as place the private carter's sticker and pick-up schedule in a store window. Click here to view a PDF version of the flyer.

Also from DSNY, effective July 1, 2015, certain expanded polystyrene (EPS) items were banned from sale, distribution, or use in NYC. These banned items include polystyrene foam single-service items including cups, bowls, plates, takeout containers, and trays and polystyrene loose fill packaging, commonly known as packing peanuts. This provision includes a grace period lasting from July 1, 2015 until January 1, 2016, however, as of last Wednesday businesses should not use or offer the aforementioned EPS items. Following the grace period, Notices of Violation will be issued and civil action may be taken. Though EPS products are commonly used, there are many alternative packaging options available including paper, plastic, aluminum, and biodegradable products. Contact your packaging distributor about accessible alternatives to foam products.

For more information about the ban including exceptions, visit nyc.gov/foam-ban. To apply for a Hardship Waiver please visit: nyc.gov/foampackagingwaiver. You can also find this information in other languages at: Foam Ban Info in Multiple Languages.
