Free Lunchtime Summer Concert Series Returns TODAY!
The highly-anticipated Free Lunchtime Summer Concert Series is back to make afternoons more festive in Lincoln Square this July and August. The favorite outdoor concerts at Richard Tucker Park will feature several new - along with a few returning - musical performers. Locals, visitors, music enthusiasts, and yogis are all encouraged to grab lunch and make their way to the park for complimentary refreshments from local eatery P.J. Clarke's, yoga from YogaWorks, and live music by top musicians from MTA's Music Under New York, NYC's eclectic "underground" scene!

The 2014 Free Lunchtime Summer Concert Series at Richard Tucker Park is presented by the Lincoln Square Business Improvement District in partnership with the MTA Arts for Transit's Music Under New York Program and with sponsorship support from TD Bank - America's Most Convenient Bank. Through these live performances at Richard Tucker Park, we celebrate New York City's diversity of music and cultures, and the great opera star, tenor Richard Tucker (1913-1975).

Lincoln Square BID Adds New Umbrellas
There are a few new shady spots to enjoy in Lincoln Square. Eight brand-new umbrellas have recently been added to our two parks.

Five new, bright-red Lincoln Square BID umbrellas are now casting handsome shadows over Richard Tucker Park. At Dante Park, three umbrellas are keeping the raised seating area a few degrees cooler.

Get out and enjoy just the right amount of summer sun under the shade of our new umbrellas. If you snap a photo of yourself enjoying the shade, be sure to share it with us on Twitter @lincolnsquareny.

Paid Sick Leave: Day of Action - Wednesday, July 16
Starting Wednesday, July 30, New Yorkers can start using earned sick leave under the City's new paid sick leave law. The law gives more than one million employees in New York City, including those that work for non-profits and small businesses, the right to take sick leave to care for themselves or a family member.

On Wednesday, July 16, you can join the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs on their 'Day of Action' and let your friends and neighbors know about their right to sick leave. Volunteers will be stationed at subway stations and high-traffic transit hubs to distribute materials and spread the word about paid sick leave during the morning and evening rush hours. Click here to register now.

If you can't volunteer, you can help spread the word on social media. Follow the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) on Twitter (@NYCDCA), Like NYCDCA on Facebook, and share important information, ask questions, or let them know how paid sick leave is working for you. Be sure to tag  NYCDCA and use the hashtag #paidsickleave.

Summer at the Cinema

Love movies? Looking for an excuse to step out of the heat and relax? Check out some of these summer flicks showing at AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13, Film Society of Lincoln Center and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas this July.

 AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13

  • Begin Again - Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo light up the screen in John Carney's newest musical drama about a young singer-songwriter and music executive collaborating in Manhattan. Carney's movies are known for their pleasant musical scores, charmingly realistic characters, and emotionally pulling plot points. This movie is ideal for those who love the "drama" movie section.
  • Earth to Echo is Disney's latest film which takes on the popular "found footage" style. Reminiscent of E.T. and other sci-fi/fantasy classics, this story follows three young boys on a journey, discovering what their friendship really means in the face of imminent change and alien encounters. Featuring some interesting camera techniques and special effects, Earth to Echo is a great family film for all ages!
  • Tammy - Melissa McCarthy is back in this hilarious, slightly raunchy comedy about a down-on-her-luck gal who travels cross-country with the aid of her profane grandmother, Susan Sarandon. This side-splitting duo is sure to dazzle and entertain, perfect for comedy junkies.
Visit amctheatres.com to see all of the blockbusters coming this summer.

3. Keep the door closed at your business to keep the cold air in.

4. Use a timer or programmable thermostat to turn on your A/C a half-hour before you get home.

5. Close shades, curtains, or blinds to keep out the sun.

Great News! DOT's Planter Moratorium Has Ended
The post-9/11 Department of Transportation (DOT) moratorium on planters has ended. This means that property owners can receive revocable consent from DOT to make improvements on certain street furniture or installations of certain street furniture, planters included.

Here at the Lincoln Square BID we are very excited to hear this news as it indicates great possibility for the neighborhood. It is part of our mission to keep Lincoln Square beautiful, and the end of this ban offers property owners the chance to continue supporting our efforts.

There are eligibility requirements and steps that must be followed to get these projects started. Some improvements, for instance, require the input of a professional engineer or designer in order to be considered. But, minor changes to items like benches or planters may have that requirement waived, making it easier to implement important improvements and additions to certain sidewalks and streets in the neighborhood.

You can fill out a Revocable Consent form and learn more on the DOT website: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/infrastructure/revconif.shtml.
