Snow Removal Responsibilities
After yesterday's snow and  Winter Storms Hercules and Janus, the Lincoln Square BID has received a number of inquiries about who is responsible for snow removal. The majority of these inquiries were from businesses, some of whom asked us to shovel their sidewalks.

We thought it would be helpful to clarify our responsibilities.

The Lincoln Square BID's services, including sanitation and area maintenance, supplement services that the City and our property owners and businesses provide.  We focus our efforts on sanitation, public safety and beautification.  NYC Department of Sanitation is responsible for street cleaning and  snow removal.  The primary responsibility for sweeping and shoveling the sidewalks rests with property owners and the lessee, tenant or occupant. Section 16-123 of the New York City Administrative Code defines the property owners' and tenants' responsibilities for snow removal, ice and dirt.

The Lincoln Square BID's Clean Team, those hard working crews you see out there every single day, supplement these services.  We have a contract with a Sanitation provider, Atlantic Maintenance, which outlines what the Clean Team is responsible for.  During snow events, we clear all corner quadrants, we clear all fire hydrants and catch basins and we clear the bus shelters.  Our Goddard Riverside Greens Keepers focus on the pedestrian crosswalks in the Broadway Malls. We also get some help from Midtown Community Court. Together, these teams work extremely hard to keep up with snow and ice accumulations and the impact of plows pushing the snow back into the crosswalks.  We count on our businesses and property owners to help out during the many snow storms so that together the sidewalks are safe for pedestrians and your customers.

The New York Times recently published a Q & A on this very issue available here.  To learn more about our area maintenance programs, visit

Ladies and Gentlemen...The Beatles!

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the arrival of The Beatles in America, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts is featuring a new exhibit, Ladies and Gentlemen... The Beatles!, running now through May 10th. The exhibition covers the period from early 1964 through mid-1966 - the years Beatlemania ran rampant in America. During this time the band affected nearly every aspect of pop culture, including fashion, art, advertising, media, and, of course, music.

On display are many Beatles-related pop culture artifacts from the period, as well as correspondence, instruments, posters, photographs, interviews, interactive displays, and an oral history booth in which visitors can leave their own impressions of The Beatles.

Admission is free to the public. To learn more about "Ladies and Gentlemen...The Beatles", visit www.nypl.org.

Herb Alpert's Spirit Totems Now In Dante Park

Giant totem sculptures  designed by Jazz legend

Herb Alpert are now on display in Dante Park. The three tall, black-bronze "Spirit Totems" will remain on display in the heart of Lincoln Square until April 15, 2014.

Herb Alpert is an eight time Grammy winner who gained notoriety with the Tijuana Brass. He compares the spontaneity of the Spirit Totem's design to improvisational jazz. In a press release Alpert said, "I spent time looking all over New York City for the ideal place for the Spirit Totems. I fell in love with Dante Park because it is an open thoroughfare where the sculptures are visible with a connection to Jazz at Lincoln Center."

To learn more about Herb Alpert visit herbalpert.herbalpertpresents.com/art or see the Spirit Totems yourself in Dante Park at West 63rd Street and Broadway.

Die Fledermaus at The Met Opera

Jeremy Sams returns to the Met, after his major success with The Enchanted Island, to direct a new production of Johann Strauss's beloved operatic confection, Die Fledermaus, with a revised libretto by acclaimed playwright Douglas Carter Beane. Sams places the action in turn-of-the-century Vienna, an elegant, opulent setting with echoes of Gustav Klimt's glittering paintings (and of Sigmund Freud's newly fashionable ideas).

Susanna Phillips and Christopher Maltman lead the sparkling cast, which also features Jane Archibald, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Michael Fabiano, and Paulo Szot. Adam Fischer conducts.

Die Fledermaus will be at The Metropolitan Opera through Saturday, February 22nd.  For tickets and more information check out metoperafamily.org
