Free Lunchtime Concerts Start Tomorrow at Richard Tucker Park
|
It is almost time for percussion, brass, world, R&B, classical, opera, jazz, swing, blues and funk as The Lincoln Square BID's Free Lunchtime Concerts return to Richard Tucker Park this week. On Wednesday, August 7th the concert series kicks off at noon with 'America's Jazz'. Yaz Band will perform classic R&B songs written by the likes of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. John Colianni Jazz Combo will follow with high energy jazz standards. Be sure to stick around between music sets because YogaWorks will be providing free restorative stretch sessions, the perfect way to relax during lunchtime. Additionally, P.J. Clarke's will offer free lemonade to help yoga enthusiasts and music lovers cool down. The concerts will continue every Wednesday in August and September from noon - 2:00pm in Richard Tucker Park. | The 2013 Free Lunchtime Concert Series at Richard Tucker Park is presented by the Lincoln Square Business Improvement District in partnership with the MTA Arts for Transit's Music Under New York Program with sponsorship support from TD Bank - America's Most Convenient Bank. Through these live performances at Richard Tucker Park, New York City celebrates the diversity of music and cultures and the great opera star, tenor Richard Tucker (1913-1975), who worked as a cantor before joining the Metropolitan Opera for a long and distinguished career. On August 28th the concert series will feature Opera Collective performing a tribute to Richard Tucker in honor of his 100th birthday that would have been that day. |

Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival is back for its 47th season with performances now through Saturday, August 24th. This year's Festival will offer more than 50 events spanning concerts, opera productions, pre-concert lectures and recitals, late-night performances, a film screening, and premieres of new works.
Festival highlights include performances by the acclaimed Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO), the Brooklyn based International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), renowned violinist and festival favorite Joshua Bell, and six late-night concerts in the Kaplan Penthouse. Of course another centerpiece of the festival will be the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra featuring musicians from premier orchestras and ensembles including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, MET Opera Orchestra, New York City Ballet Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Also this month, Lincoln Center Out of Doors is keeping the plazas of Lincoln Center filled with world-class music, dance, and spoken word. Performances will continue through Sunday, August 11th and the best part is they are all absolutely free.
There are many exciting acts left to be seen during the final week of Lincoln Center Out of Doors, including The Roots Symposium at the David Rubenstein Atrium, The No BS! Brass Band at The Josie Robertson Plaza and Amanda Palmer & the Grand Theft Orchestra at the Damrosch Park Bandshell. "Where to Eat" makes it easy to find exactly what you want by listing all of Lincoln Square's restaurants, bars and quick-serves by cuisine or style. The guide also includes each restaurant's contact information so you can reserve your table.

IT'SUGAR Launches New Smurfs Themed Sweets
|
IT'SUGAR has partnered with Sony Pictures to introduce a playful line of chocolate bars in support of the new Smurf's movie, The Smurfs 2, which opened last week. These premium milk chocolate bars will feature images of cherished Smurf characters. IT'SUGAR sells a variety of sweet things including candy, novelties and gifts. Their bulk candy selection gives you plenty of options for snacks to munch on during the movie. Lincoln Square's IT'SUGAR is located at 1850 Broadway between 61st and 62nd Street. Some buzz worthy beautification developments are happening
in Lincoln Square. The renovations to Dante Park that began in April are nearing completion. Movable chairs and tables are back out along Columbus Ave. Construction is expected to be finished in the fall. Work on Richard Tucker Park will begin in mid-September.
After checking out the exciting renovations in Dante Park, be sure to admire the lovely summer plantings that are in full bloom right now in our Broadway Malls and our 40 planters from 60th to 70th Street.

The Metropolitan Opera's 2013 Summer HD Festival
|
The Met's Summer HD Festival returns for its fifth year on Saturday, August 24th, with ten free outdoor screenings of popular performances from the Met's award-winning Live in HD series.
The festival kicks off with a screening of the Met's acclaimed production of Verdi's La Traviata starring Natalie Dessay, Matthew Polenzani, and Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Three new productions from the Met's 2012-13 season will also be screened in this year's festival: Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera and Thomas Adès' The Tempest.
All screenings take place on the Josie Robertson Plaza at Lincoln Center and most start times are at 8:00pm. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and no tickets are required. More than 3,100 seats will be available each evening with additional standing room available on the plaza.

Church of St. Paul of the Apostle Named a Landmark

Earlier this summer The Church of St. Paul the Apostle, located at Columbus Avenue and 60th Street, was officially named a New York City Landmark. Built in 1875-85 and commissioned by the Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle, the church has an austere Medieval Revival style, loosely based on Gothic and Romanesque design. The Landmarks Preservation Commission said that the church has a special character and a special historical and aesthetic interest and value as part of the development, history, and cultural characteristics of New York City. Whether you bleed Giants blue or Jets green we should all bleed for New York City. The 2013 Super Bowl Host Committee is partnering with New York Blood Center (NYBC) to help increase blood donations leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII.
The NYPD's 20th Precinct is organizing its drive on Tuesday, August 13th from noon - 6:00pm at 120 West 82nd Street, Muster Room. All presenting donors with NYBC between now and January 17, 2014 will be entered into a sweepstakes to win one pair of tickets to Super Bowl XLVIII.

The summer heat is on, but the Lincoln Square BID is already talking about Winter's Eve at Lincoln Square, New York's largest holiday festival, which is set to return for its fourteenth year on Monday, December 2, 2013.
This year City Activators, led by Karin Bacon, will be taking the reins as Winter's Eve producers. They plan to bring new visual and atmospheric elements and carefully curated entertainment to Winter's Eve. In other words, they plan to make a great event even better.
