First Lady Announces After-School Initiative
http://nyti.ms/1hovkal
WASHINGTON - Michelle Obama on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 introduced a broad, five-year initiative to make after-school programs a healthier, more active environment for millions of children, saying the changes would also help the children's performance during the other hours of the day.
In a statement released, the first lady announced a commitment by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the National Recreation and Park Association to provide children with healthy snacks including fruits and vegetables and opportunities for at least 30 minutes of physical activity.
"This is going to make a huge impact - not just on our kids' health, but on their success in school and in life," she said in the statement.
Working with the Partnership for a Healthier America, the nonprofit group that supports Mrs. Obama's "Let's Move!" campaign, the changes are expected to improve the nutrition and fitness standards for about five million children in after-school care at parks, clubs and other facilities, the White House said.
The new standards will involve 3,400 clubs under the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and 2,000 sites under the National Recreation and Park Association.
This announcement is the latest push in Mrs. Obama's efforts to work with outside groups to improve children's health and their performance in school.
The Y.M.C.A., one of the largest child care providers in the country, adopted similar standards for its programs in 2011, hoping to press other care providers to do the same to encourage healthy behavior in children.

Math Relays
The Kansas City Kansas Public Schools Math Relays was held on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Wyandotte High School. Kansas Enrichment Network partnered with the district for the college and career fair, which is part of the event.
"Never underestimate youthful inquisitiveness. It is a powerful thing."
Adam Miller, Kansas State University
"I've been blown away by the bright young people at this event. Our future is in good hands."
Emily Surdez, Kansas State University
"Young people are being exposed to STEM related activities early, because they decide what they don't like by the 7th grade. It is good that they are being exposed to different areas using math skills to make the world a better place."
Jacquelyn Pedigo, University of Kansas

Kansas Out-of-School Conference
Call for Presenters
The Kansas Out-of-School Conference will be held on Tuesday October 7, 2014 at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center. The audience for this conference is out-of-school (before, after and summer) program staff and directors from across the state of Kansas. The conference is co-sponsored by K-State Research and Extension, Kansas Enrichment Network and Kansas Department of Education, and is a 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) statewide conference. About 190 people attended last year. The conference coordinators seek to offer the widest possible variety of options so that attendees will have a lot to take back and use in their programs. We are looking for presenters and exhibitors to share hands-on curricula and programming resources in 50 minute seminars or at free-standing booths. Our hope is that staff will leave the conference with all the knowledge, skill and supporting documents they need to teach something new to their students the next day. If there is a favorite curriculum, activity, resource or technique that you have used successfully in your program, please consider sharing it with others at this year's seminars. We encourage hands-on teaching and experiential learning at the Kansas Out-of-School Conference. We will be glad to help you design a hands-on seminar if you have a great idea, but aren't quite sure how to present it to others. The deadline is April 1st.

Exchange City students are immersed in the real-life tasks of collaborating with peers to simulate a successful city including:
- Producing products and services to sell,
- Developing and implementing a marketing plan,
- Making, spending and investing money, and
- Building a thriving business district and community.
EarthWorks students work together as they:

There is no better time to expand their Exchange City or EarthWorks experience than during our summer CuriosityCamps! TLE CuriosityCamps are some of the best summer camps in Kansas City! Our summer camps are fun and engaging. Children broaden their knowledge, strengthen problem-solving skills and engage in critical thinking. They learn how to explore, investigate and strategize in either a real-life city or natural habitat. Students become fully engaged and excited while learning and getting hands-on with our activities. If you would like to schedule your school group for a CuriosityCamp, please contact Kelly or call 816-659-8543. |
