Thank you to all who hosted/ participated in a Lights On Afterschool event. Seventy five programs registered their events on the Afterschool Alliance website.
Here are just some of the many activities/events that took place across the state throughout the month of October.
Took the students to have the Mayor sign a Proclamation for Lights on Afterschool.
Liberal
Held an open house with different activities throughout the school.
Kansas Children's Discovery Center- Topeka
Celebrated the last day of their first after school camp. The camp "The Monarchs Fly Home" uncovers the mysteries of the Monarch butterfly migration and the unique connection with the Day of the Dead holiday. Campers built a life sized Monarch Forest with artist Kelly Thomas Sanders. The Huitzilopochtli Traditional Aztec Dance Group from Denver, CO performed at their event.
K-State Olathe
Students explored the engineering involved in robotics and designed a mini "monster" bot, learned about the principles of architecture and technology in building bridges, discovered the science components in a witch's brew of water, and then created a filtration system to clean it.
YMCA of Greater Kansas City
Students participated in a STEM experience with lava lamps and a cooking activity.
YWCA of Topeka
Had ice cream floats at their event. The students created Lights On Afterschool artwork and it was displayed at the event. The students from several sites presented to the group on why they liked going to their before and/or afterschool program.
Parsons
Held a showing of The Graduates/Los Graduados at Labette Community College on October 14th and organized by Kalynn Amundson in partnership with Community Cinema.

Brown v. Board- Topeka
Featured Drums Alive and "Human Geometry" for over sixty students from Williams Science and Fine ArtsMagnet School. The students participated in a fun and innovative group exercise experience facilitated by Chris Omni, CEO of Wellness Information Network through choreography to music and movement. Teachers from Williams Elementary facilitated students in a group exercise to learn geometry through physical movement. A reception, hosted by Kansas Enrichment Network, was held right before the children's activities. Among those that attended the reception were Representative John Alcala, Kansas Legislature; Carolyn Campbell, Kansas State Board of Education Board Member; Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor, Shawnee County Sheriff Herman T. Jones; Topeka City Mayor Larry Wolgast; Karen Hiller, Topeka City Council member; John Williams, Topeka Public Schools Board Member; Dr. Julie Ford, Topeka Public Schools Superintendent; Martie Gies, Principal of Williams Magnet School and our very own Executive Committee Members, Laura Kaiser, Chris Macy and Mark Farr.
