Dear Afterschool Friends-

As with the change in the color of the leaves, Kansas Enrichment Network has also had a change with a move to a vibrant new location. On October 30, 2013, we moved to a new location in the St. Andrews Research Facility located at 1617 St. Andrews Dr., Lawrence, KS 66047.

Our move wrapped up the month of October after many Lights On Afterschool events. Thanks to all who hosted/participated in an activity/event. Please be sure to mark your calendar with the 2014 Lights On Afterschool date, which is October 23, 2014.

My heartfelt thanks goes to Michelle Wilson who managed this project and attended a variety of events as well as to Kevyn Gero and Rachel Willis who also participated in events across the state. It was a successful year.

We are so proud of our state's out-of-school programs that make quality their priority, providing an important and valued service to our Kansas youth and their families.

Thankful for Math: Top 10 Reasons

#1 When someone talks about an acute angle, you'll know not to say, "oh yeah, that angle is so cute."

#2  Knowing you're a millionaire because you can count that high.

#3  Knowing that a factor tree is not the oak next to the school parking lot.

#4  Pi Day, isn't really about pie, but don't tell anyone.

#5  Realizing that people can be like numbers: irrational, complex and perfect.

#6  Realizing that place value doesn't refer to how close your desk is to the vending machine.

#7  Understanding that the distributive property has nothing to do with real estate.

#8  Solving word problems could lead to solving problems!

#9 Knowing that a negative number isn't a number with an attitude problem!

#10  Knowing that if there are 50 students in a class then it's virtually certain that two will share the same birthday, so hope they both bring in a cake.

Kansas is a rich and diverse state - and this diversity often offers us challenges and opportunities. During this Afterschool Conference Call, we will discuss the lessons that can be learned from our similarities: the desire to provide quality programming, our challenges in dealing with school funding issues, and how we engage and bring out the best in our students. We will also talk about ways to address challenges and find common ground so that afterschool programs all across the state can find ways to stand together and speak with one voice so that we help one another be the best we can be.

KS Out-of-School Conference a Success!

The 2013 Kansas Out-of-School Conference was a great success. About 200 attendees learned about inclusion from Torrie Dunlap, Kids Included Together (KIT) executive director. After the keynote presentation, participants selected which breakout sessions to attend. Session topics included nutrition, NASA rocketry sampler, trebuchets, literacy and technology. The conference welcomed three new exhibitors Exploration Place, Sedgwick County Zoo and Scholastic. At the conclusion of the event, prizes such as curriculum, t-shirts and office supplies, were given away. Kansas Enrichment Network looks forward to working with Sedgwick County Extension Education Center to host the conference again. Visit www.4-H.org/my4-H and search using the tag "Kansas Out-of-School Conference" to find the handouts that were distributed throughout the day.
