Dear Afterschool Friends-

October has been a busy month in preparation for the many Lights On Afterschool events across the state. A big "Thank You" to all who are hosting/participating in a Lights On Afterschool event this year. Lights On is a great way to bring awareness to the community, decision makers and policy makers about the importance of afterschool programs. Please register your event on www.afterschoolalliance.org before October 17, 2013. There is still time for you to organize an activity. If this is your first year, you can always start small with light bulb art, a community service project, art show, or even a pizza party. Please send Lights On Afterschool photos with details of your event to Michelle Wilson at michellewilson@ku.edu. We will feature photos in an upcoming newsletter.

Lights On Afterschool

Mulvane Art Museum in Topeka kicked off their Lights On Afterschool event on October 15th by providing Museum tours and hands-on art activities for students and families from Jardine and French Middle Schools, USD 501, afterschool programs. There were 93 students and 20 adults that attended the event, where they learned about the artwork of James Cook, and the students made their own textured art in the Artlab.

Please register your event(s) with the Afterschool Alliance at http://www.afterschoolalliance.org/loa.cfm. This website also has information on planning and organizing a Lights On Afterschool event.

Kansas is a rich and diverse state - and this diversity often offers us challenges and opportunities. During this Afterschool Conference Call, we will discuss the lessons that can be learned from our similarities: the desire to provide quality programming, our challenges in dealing with school funding issues, and how we engage and bring out the best in our students. We will also talk about ways to address challenges and find common ground so that afterschool programs all across the state can find ways to stand together and speak with one voice so that we help one another be the best we can be.
