Dear Afterschool Advocates:
Time sure does fly. I hope that everyone had a good summer. Can you believe the 2013-2014 school year is starting?
There is always a need for professional development opportunities, as well as, advocating for out-of-school time programs. Please check out the information in this issue about the Out-of-School conference in Wichita on October 8th. Registration information appears below.
Then - challenge for you. Last year approximately 80 programs registered Lights On Afterschool events on the Afterschool Alliance website. This is a great time to join others across the nation in highlighting the importance of Afterschool/Expanded Learning Opportunities. Would you host an event, large or small, elaborate or simple and register it on the Afterschool Alliance website? Could we host 120 or 130 events this year? See the details below and be sure to let us know if you are doing something special. We are always eager to share stories.
Please feel free to share the information in our newsletter with others and have them sign up to receive them directly.

Youth Activity
Save the Children will be hosting, the World Marathon Challenge. It is an event where a group of children or team can register children online. There is no cost for registration. The children get sponsors and come together to run a lap around a track in a relay until they get to the distance of a marathon. The goal is for the children to collectively break the world record for the marathon held by Kenyan Olympian,
Patrick Makau. It's a global event so it's a cool way to let children feel connected to a much bigger issue and bring in enrichment lessons about global child issues, teamwork, goal setting etc.
