I would also like to thank the more than one hundred participants, who took time out of their busy schedule to attend the conference. We received a lot of positive feedback about the sessions.

The conference, titled, "Connecting in a High Speed World: Preparing for Graduation and Beyond," gathered more than 200 leaders from the education, nonprofit, corporate and government sectors. New After-School Toolkit

The YMCA of the USA Health Promotion Standards include guidelines for Physical Activity and Healthy Eating in out of school time programs. The standards recommend that sites dedicate at least 20%, or at least 30 minutes of morning or after-school program time to physical activity (60 minutes for a full day program). Simply adopting these standards, however,  does not ensure successful implementation of health promotion policies.

The A + Toolkit was designed by researchers to assist after school sites with program self assessment and action planning in support of the Health Promotion Standards. The attached article suggests that meeting the physical activity standards for many sites is a challenge; CATCH Kids Club is included as a resource that supports training, equipment, evaluation, and coordination as after school sites work towards meeting the standard recommendations.

Information about the A+ Toolkit is available under the Evaluations and Surveys section in the

CATCH Resource Vault/CATCH Kids Club.

Summer...

The summer is not just for relaxing and vacations. When you were young, you may recall the book challenges that you may have participated in over the summer. It was a time for you to impress your parents and teachers on how many books that you could read to earn a prize. Although you received a prize, which may have been a toy or treat, you also received a prize of working your mind over the summer months, so that you didn't lose everything you learned during the school year. There is an article below from Expanding Minds and Opportunities (Compendium) titled "Using Afterschool and Summer Learning to Improve Literacy Skills", which hits on the importance of keeping children engaged in learning during out-of-school time to increase their literacy skills.
