Dear Afterschool Supporters:
Greetings from the Kansas Enrichment Network! The Spring season for the Network offers new beginning for two staff members, Michelle Wilson and Rachel Willis.
Michelle has a Bachelor of General Studies with an emphasis in Communications from the University of Kansas and a Master of Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Public Administration from Washburn University. Her experience includes over twenty years in management, over seventeen years as a trainer and over fifteen years in non-profit, in addition to experience as a substitute teacher and program director of out-of-school time programs. Michelle enjoys organizing events and activities and brings strong process skills to the team. As a certified fitness instructor, she teaches fitness classes in her spare time.
Rachel is the former executive director of Kids Voting USA. She has worked in K-12th grade civic education for the last 5 years. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Washburn University and is enrolled in the master of public administration program at the University of Kansas.
We also celebrate Kevyn Gero's completing her year of service as a VISTA volunteer and welcome her as a temporary employee. Kevyn has been accepted into graduate school at the University of Kansas (Congrats, Kevyn!) and so we are thrilled to announce she will stay with us as a Graduate Research Assistant.
Please join me in welcoming these three talented individuals to the Network.
Additionally, we celebrate the life of Steve Lehmann, teacher at Reno Valley Middle School, Nickerson School District and director of the Afterschool Program. Steve passed away on Tuesday, April 23, resulting in a great loss to the afterschool field in Kansas. He was dedicated to providing positive expanded learning opportunities, always willing to learn and share strategies, and constantly looking for new ways to engage young people in the out-of-school hours. Steve served on the Kansas Enrichment Network Executive Committee, the Kansas STEM Leadership Team and the Kansas Afterschool Task Force. He will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, and the Nickerson School District.
Enjoy the remainder of the newsletter. We hope it provides you with valuable information. As always, please reach out to us with your questions and stories of celebration.
Sincerely,
Marcia Dvorak, Director

Fund Raisers
Types of Fund Raising Events from A to Z
F
Face Painting: Set up a booth at a local event. Kids love it. Charge .50¢ and up.
Fashion Show: Work with a new or existing clothing store to hold a fashion show. You could have it at the store or at a local club or hall. Offer refreshments and your team members can be the models.
Fast Food Restaurants: Ask your local restaurants if they will have a Bike-a-thon Day. Either a percentage of the day's profit or from a certain menu item will go towards your team.
Fifty/Fifty Drawing: Hold fifty/fifty drawings at your place of business weekly or monthly. Everyone loves to win money. Sell chances and the winner gets half of the money collected and the other half goes to your organization..
Flamingo Alert: Place a pink flamingo (lawn ornament) in someone's yard. It will fly away after you make a donation to your organization.
Flower Bouquet Raffle: Ask a local florist to donate one bouquet of flowers each month for a three-month period (or go to three different florists and ask for one bouquet from each). This is a good fundraiser for corporate teams with a large staff, especially during the winter months.
Flower Sale: Work with a local florist or wholesaler and sell bouquets, potted flowers or individual flowers (carnations and roses) at your school or office. Especially popular around Mother's Day and Valentine's Day.

Expanding learning, expanding opportunities
This week I was in Kansas City as a keynote speaker for the 2013 Best Practices Forum on Dropout Prevention, hosted by the National Dropout Prevention Center/Network. I was thrilled to be a part of the event and share with the audience the many ways the afterschool field is helping our students come to school, stay in school and graduate. Afterschool programs are an instrumental part of any effort to help our students not only graduate from high school, but prepare them for lifelong success and help shape the adult he or she will become. - Jody Grant

$10,000 Afterschool STEM Impact Award
The Afterschool Alliance is recognizing exemplary afterschool STEM programs serving young people in grades 4 through 8 with two $10,000 Afterschool STEM Impact Awards. Applicants will be judged by the impact of their program on participating youth. Winners and other notable applicants will be recognized in nationally-released issue briefs, invited to present at national conferences and will be highlighted as model programs. The Afterschool Alliance is especially excited to discover programs that are having a significant impact on youth, but may not have been recognized with awards before. One award will be given in each of the two categories:
- Afterschool programs that are a strong partnership between an afterschool provider and a STEM-rich institution(s), which include science centers or museums, nature centers, universities, government labs, STEM-related businesses, or other similar institutions. Programs may focus on any STEM topic.
- Afterschool programs that have a strong computing and/or engineering component. Computing programs should focus on helping young people acquire the skills and knowledge required to create technology, not just to use it. Engineering programs should be rooted in the engineering design process, and students should be developing and building a solution to a problem.
Applications are due May 15, 2013. For additional details and to apply, click here. If you have any questions about the application process, please contact Melissa Ballard at mjballard@afterschoolalliance.org or call
