What is the Secret to Childhood Success?
Failure, according to New York Times best-selling author of How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character, Paul Tough. This idea may be against conventional wisdom. Tough addressed childhood success and failure rates, the role of positive adult mentors and the correlation of an individual's IQ and academic test scores as measurable factors to a child's success at the open plenary session at the National Network of Statewide Afterschool Networks. |

A is for Apple, C is for Carrots: A New Look for School Vending Machines
Last week, the USDA released new proposed guidelines for snacks and beverages in schools. These new guidelines will affect the items sold outside the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Program in vending machines, school stores, and a la carte items.
So What?
Well, the new rules could reduce student caloric intake by more than 150 calories a day. Similar rules have done just that in California where students "eat 158 fewer calories a day than kids in other states," according to an article in NPR's The Salt. Learn more about the proposed vending guidelines.

Data Sharing Across School Systems
and Community Organizations
Research and experience tells us that coordinated data-sharing between schools and afterschool programs can improve the quality of student learning. In a new report the Partnership for Children and Youthdescribes how this can work in practice. Their report, Data-Sharing: Federal Rules and Best Practices to Improve Out-of-School-Time Programs and Student Outcomes, describes how school systems and their community partners can share student data effectively within the framework of the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The report gives examples of how some school systems have coordinated their approaches to share data as a result were able to improve education programs and student outcomes.
