  Expanded Learning
 A Key Issue in ESEA Reauthorization and Beyond

Expanded learning time (ELT) is a relatively new approach to out of school time learning opportunities.  Like quality afterschool, before-school, and summer learning programs, there are essential principles of these programs that increase the likelihood of success.  At a minimum, expanded learning time programs should go beyond simply adding additional time to the school day.

The Afterschool Alliance has created a publication to define and outline the eight principles of afterschool best practices key to developing successful expanded learning programs which include incorporate successful afterschool practices: engaging students in their own education by providing hands-on, experiential learning opportunities through community partnerships that build on-but do not replicate-learning that happens during the school day.    In addition a compilation of  additional perspectives, evaluations and analysis from our own resources as well as from outside sources to provide you with a comprehensive guide to this model of expanded learning.

Policy
Afterschool for All Challenge

This year, Afterschool Alliance will  not be asking you to travel to Washington, D.C., for the Afterschool for All Challenge.  Instead, they  polled programs and with a  resounding response, they have  heard you, loud and clear; budgets are tight and times are uncertain for  afterschool programs.

 Afterschool Alliance is encouraging local communities to rally for action by emailing, calling, or meeting with your Congressional representatives on  the Afterschool for All Challenge day,  Feb. 7, 2013.  The National Network of Statewide Afterschool Networks will be conducting face-to-face meetings with Congress in Washington, D.C.

It is more  important  than ever to let Congress know about the need for affordable afterschool resources for youth, families and communities.

 Taking the Afterschool for All Challenge: District Meetings

DATE/TIME: January 10 @ 1:00-1:30 PM EST

REPEATED:  January 23 @ 1:00-1:30 PM EST

Description:

In communities across the country, afterschool programs are facing an uncertain financial future and a rocky economic climate. Our nation's leaders need to hear what is happening in their districts-both the struggles and the amazing success stories of the kids whose lives are impacted by these programs every day. This year, it will be particularly critical to make our voices heard. That's why we're asking program staff, parents, educators and everyone in between to take the Afterschool for All Challenge on February 7, 2013.

Instead of joining us on Capitol Hill, you can help protect and expand quality afterschool programs by setting up meetings with the local district offices of your Members of Congress. Our goal is to get as many afterschool supporters as possible to arrange these meetings on February 7.  This webinar will guide you through the process of setting up the visit, offer some practical resources to help you with the meeting and provide suggestions for what to bring. Our staff will be available to answer your questions about how to get the most out of the visit.

Health & Wellness  or  21st CCLC
Governor Brownback's Weight Loss Challenge

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback announced today that the awards for the winning teams in the Governor's Weight Loss Challenge will total more than $14,000.  The prizes are made possible by two health plans with a presence in Kansas: UnitedHealthGroup and CoventryHealth Care of Kansas.

"The purpose of this weight loss challenge is to bring awareness to the obesity epidemic in our country and offer a fun way for Kansans to kick off a new lifestyle of healthy habits."

Governor Brownback has challenged State of Kansas employees and other interested groups to form teams of five, to start eating healthier and to become more active in an effort to lose a greater percentage of weight than the Governor's team of five. However, only State of Kansas employees are eligible for these monetary awards.

The challenge begins Jan. 15 and ends May 15. Registration for teams is taking place now through Jan. 14.

The following prize amounts have been set for the State of Kansas teams placing in the competition:

*           1st place: $5,000 dollars ($1,000 per person)

*           2nd place: $2,500 ($500 per person)

*           State employee teams-not including 1st and 2nd place-that beat Governor Brownback's team will be entered in a drawing to result in 14 additional teams winning   $500 a team ($100 per person)

Already, more than 500 teams have signed up to challenge the Governor's team- including 104 non-state teams from local health departments, municipalities, school districts and private industry.

To be eligible for prizes, the initial weight for State of Kansas participants must be validated by a health care professional-nurse, doctor, physician assistant, etc.-through the use of an official form available on the Challenge website. Weight is entered into the tracking system privately by the individual and is combined with the team's weight to be tracked collectively.

Official contest rules and details for weigh-in validation are at www.weightloss.ks.gov.

New Day's Resolutions

Achieve a Little Health Every Day

For you...

Instead of trying to become "healthy" by the end of 2013, try to be a little healthier every day. Set a few simple goals like drinking one more glass of water or drinking one less soda every day this year.

 For your kids...
Every day your child is learning new habits or strengthening old habits. Set some simple rules to encourage their healthy behaviors one day at a time. Try watching one hour less of TV every night or letting your child pick a new fruit and vegetable every week this year.

 For your school...
Create a healthier school one step at a time. Is your school participating in the Healthy Schools Program? If so, take a look at your Inventory and highlight those things you want to accomplish this year. Not sure? Check your school's status and sign up to join or start a team.

 For your community...

Visit the places your children spend their time before and after school and during school breaks. See if they are meeting your child's physical activity and healthy eating needs and if you can help empower your child to improve their community
