Dear Afterschool Advocates,

The month of October has been exciting as great partners from across the state have held Lights On Afterschool events. Thank you to all who hosted a program event, to our partners on the Santa Fe Trail who allowed us to promote our "Kansas Afterschool Lights the Trail," and to our many other friends who brought attention in their own way to the importance of afterschool and expanded learning time (ELO). More details of Kansas events will follow in this newsletter and next month's. Thank you for all you do for children and youth! Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and check out our website www.kansasenrichment.net  to see pictures and videos.

Afterschool an education issue:

Quality programs accelerate student achievement through the ABCs - Attendance: students are more likely to come to school; Behavior: students behave better; and Coursework: students do better in school. We need Afterschool.

Afterschool is an economic issue:

This is an opportune time to expose students to careers and teach them skills that can unlock doors to future career prospects and prevent dropping out. Afterschool keeps children/youth in school and prevents dropping out. We need Afterschool. Business and industry need afterschool programs.

Afterschool is a family issue:

Children and youth need to be in safe, friendly, engaging environments while caretakers are engaged at work or seeking work. We need Afterschool.

A special thank you to Claudia Conner and Kevyn Gero in my office who worked tirelessly to prepare for Lights On! Your work is genuinely appreciated.

Happy Lights On Afterschool!

Marcia Dvorak, Director

"In today's knowledge economy, America's standard school day and year are simply too short to provide our students with the time and resources they need to earn a well-rounded, world-class education. Afterschool programs can provide a safe and engaging place where children can be productive after the school day ends. ... Lights on Afterschool celebrates schools serving as community centers and shines a spotlight on programs that give kids greater academic and extracurricular opportunities." US Secretary of Education Arny Duncan
