From the President:
October was another month of progress and celebration for the Katy ISD community. On October 24, the Board of Trustees hosted "The Exchange," an opportunity to have a conversation with community members in an informal setting. The meeting allowed us to share the role of the Board and identify education topics for future discussions. We look forward to the next Exchange and I thank everyone who came out that evening. Hearing directly from you, our community, is invaluable as we work together to maintain the high regard of Katy ISD.
During this month's Work Study, the Board passed a resolution naming the week of Oct. 22-26 as School Bus Driver Appreciation Week in Katy ISD. Throughout that week, Board Secretary Henry Dibrell and I enjoyed meeting staff members from the district's three transportation centers during celebration breakfasts held in their honor. My biggest take-away from these visits was to see the smiles on each and every bus driver's face as they finished their morning routes. They truly enjoy their jobs and are dedicated to transporting our children safely and orderly to and from school each day.
Regards,
Rebecca Fox, President

Board Notes:
District receives "Superior Achievement" Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (F.I.R.S.T.)
Chief Financial Officer Bill Moore held a public hearing and presented the district's rating on the TEA's Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas. Katy ISD has earned a rating of Superior Achievement for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, and has received this top rating for each of the ten years that Texas districts have been rated. FIRST is a statewide rating system created to ensure that school districts are held accountable for the quality of their financial management practices, while achieving improved performance in the management of their financial resources.
Katy is Still Growing
Dr. Pat Guseman, with Population and Survey Analysts (PASA), along with Katy ISD Chief Operations Officer Tom Gunnell, presented the 2012 Demographic Update that shows steady growth for Katy ISD, particularly in the west, northwest and southwest corridors. The report projects the addition of more than 34,000 new housing units (multi-family and single family) for Katy ISD during the next 10 years. Katy ISD is currently the 12th largest district in the state and the 67th largest district in the nation.
Option for High School No. 7 Attendance Boundaries Presented
The preliminary Attendance Boundary Modification option for High School No. 7 was included as part of the Demographic Update. The campus, opening in fall 2013, will open with no less than 804 students in grades 9 and 10 - the same student population as Seven Lakes High School when it opened its doors in 2005. To view the full Demographic Update or to find more information about how to provide ABM feedback, visit the Katy ISD website.
Walker and Biker Safety Addressed
The Board of Trustees approved two proposals that will make walking and/or biking to school safer for our children. These proposals will allow for items such as additional lighting, bike racks and speed bumps throughout the district, as well as additional crossing guards in expanded school zone areas.
