SUMMER  2013
A note from our President
Greetings!

There is a lot to celebrate and to be thankful for in Honduras!

Our board enjoyed a time of retreat at the lovely El Sembrador school facility last week.   We reflected on accomplishments during 2012 and on strategic objectives for 2014 and beyond.

We are thankful for the dedicated and eager students funded by Predisan's scholarship programs.  We also celebrate the progress made toward conflict resolution and relationship building through the excellent teaching and mentoring by Dr. Ryan Blucker.  Leadership Corps, an organization partnering with Predisan to grow our organizational leadership structure and to mentor us in board development, has given me personally many reasons to celebrate!

As always, YOU are the driving force behind Predisan's ability to accomplish our goal of proclaiming Jesus and healing lives in Honduras.   Join with us as we celebrate all God is accomplishing for His kingdom at one of our fall Walk with Honduras events:

  • October 13, in Atlanta, Georgia
  • October 27,  in Oklahoma City.

Save the date!

Grateful for you all -

Linda

Scholarship Program Needs Sponsors to Bring Light to Young Lives

"There is always a need for more sponsors. In fact, 20 children currently do not have sponsors and will not be able to attend school without the help."

Juan Carlos Reyes, Scholarship Program Director

Dilcy

For 13-year-old Dilcy Zavala Murillo, being accepted into Predisan's scholarship program was a lifeline, a way to escape the sadness of being abandoned by her mother and the key to fulfilling her dream of attending school.

The Future Leaders of Catacamas Program is helping 151 children just like Dilcy i

n urban and rural areas served by Predisan. A total of 31 different schools have children participating in the program.

The scholarships were created to support students who are economically disadvantaged and who have achieved grades of greater than 85 percent. A donation of $300 for one year provides a child with a required school uniform, shoes, school supplies, access to medical care, tutoring and counseling by our staff, and a monthly stipend to help the child and the family.

Each donor is assigned one or more children and receives information periodically about the child's family and the child's progress, academically and emotionally.

But there is always a need for more sponsors, says Juan Carlos Reyes, the program's director. In fact, 20 children currently do not have sponsors and will not be able to attend school without the help.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to do as Christ did, give food to those who are hungry and water to those who are thirsty," Juan Carlos says. "We make sure that every penny is put to good use."

Dilcy's help came just in time. When her mother left the family, Dilcy was just 9 years old and had to assume responsibility for the household chores, helping her father, and for caring for her three younger
brothers, who are now ages 11, 8 and 4.

Now that she has the support that this scholarship brings, Dilcy says she is working extra every day to take advantage of the opportunity. She wants to one day attend a university and become a civil engineer. Most of all, she wants to be an example to her brothers, to help them so they can graduate and all be able to help their father.

"I'm just grateful to God for the opportunity, and to get to know the people who work in the scholarship program," Dilcy says. "I also thank all the people of Predisan for choosing me for this scholarship. May God help them so they can help others like me."

To sponsor a child for one year, you may donate one of two ways:

·         CLICK HERE to donate $300 online for each child you wish to sponsor (or send a check to Predisan, Post Office Box 72618, Marietta, GA 30007), or

School in Honduras runs from February until November, and commitments for new sponsors are finalized from November until the school year starts in February. You can commit at any time to help during the next school year.

CEREPA Celebrates 25 Years of Helping, Physically and Spiritually

CEREPA.25
Hundreds turn out to celebrate CEREPA's 25th Anniversary

For 25 years, there's been an oasis in Honduras for those struggling from alcohol and drug addiction, a place where more than 3,000 people have come to be healed, physically and spiritually.

Earlier this year, hundreds of well-wishers gathered to celebrate the legacy of this place that Dr. Amanda Madrid calls "God's vision realized in Honduras through Predisan."

The Center for the Rehabilitation of Patients with Addictions (CEREPA) marked its quarter-century birthday with a week of events in late May, bringing together private ceremonies and public gatherings that included a walk and parade in which 2,000 people participated, including 18 schools, and current and former patients and their families.

The festivities pulled together well-wishers and organizations, from the Red Cross and 11 local churches, to the National Police and the Honduran Ministry of Education.

"Since this dream began, we have been committed to the rehabilitation of people suffering from addiction and to guiding the process of their integration into society after they have lost their faith and hope," Dr. Madrid says. "Our work began 25 years ago and to this day, we maintain that devotion to serve families who come to our center for solace and peace."

Dr. Madrid helped found the Center in 1987 and remains its ardent champion as executive director of Predisan. A highlight of the week was a plaque installed at the Center recognizing her critical role at CEREPA.

CEREPA has 20 employees who in turn give quality care to patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The team of professionals - including doctors, psychologists, nurse practitioners, pastors, occupational therapists and administrators - is bolstered by a healthy surplus of volunteers, some who are former patients or their relatives. American missionaries and brigades also come regularly to help with infrastructure projects and training.

The week's final event was a fundraising gala and dinner that featured 300 invited guests, including former patients, some of whom gave poignant testimonials, as well as a moving talk entitled "Perseverance" from one of the local church pastors. The dinner helped raise the equivalent of $3,155 for the center.

"Thank God," Dr. Madrid says, "for giving us the opportunity to be an instrument for His glory and honor."

She hopes that CEREPA's legacy not only will be that it is known as a professionally-run addiction treatment center, but that it has a strong spiritual component at its core, that "we have personnel trained not only in addiction treatment, but who also have the desire to share their gifts and talents to serve and love our fellow neighbors when they are hurting."

To find out more about CEREPA's work, please visit: http://www.predisan.org/what-we-do/cerepa-addiction-treatment-center/. To contact CEREPA, please e-mail cerepa@predisan.org,

or call 504.799.4630 or 504.799.1969 in Honduras. Donations to Predisan support CEREPA's work.

OUR MISSION AND VISION
PREDISAN exists as a Christian healthcare organization so that individuals in our service area (currently eastern Honduras) can experience wholeness - spiritual, physical, social, economic and environmental health - according to God's redemptive plan.

We focus on three areas of ministry that provide a holistic approach to healing lives: Healthcare, Community Development and Spiritual Formation.

Predisan's calling and its name are based on two Spanish words:
predicar (to proclaim) and sanar (to heal), taken from

Luke 9:2, when Jesus sends his disciples "... to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick."
