Executive Order Has Local Impact
from Denise Cumbee Long
Executive Director

President Obama's recent Executive Order will soon impact many lives in the Charlotte area. The Order extends protection from deportation to about 4.3 million unauthorized immigrants in the United States. Immigrants will be eligible to apply for three years of relief from deportation and work permits if they arrived in the US before 2010 and were under the age of 16 upon arrival. They are also eligible to apply for this relief if they arrived in the US before 2010 and have at least one child who is a US citizen or legal resident.

It is important to remember what the Obama administration is - and is not - doing with this Order.  What the administration is doing is allowing certain unauthorized immigrants to apply for something called "deferred action." Deferred action offers protection from deportation for a certain amount of time - in this case, three years. The administration is also issuing work permits, which allow people to work in the US legally, to those immigrants who receive deferred action.

But deferred action, even with a work permit, isn't the same as legal status. Immigrants who get deferred action are still unauthorized. They are not legal, and they are not getting a path to citizenship.  The President is not legalizing millions of immigrants with this Order, but he is providing temporary relief that will allow many to come out of the shadows, work here legitimately, and stay with their families without the daily fear of deportation.

We look forward to assisting those who will be eligible for our services under the President's Executive Order, even as we continue to serve hundreds of refugees and immigrants who are already eligible.  International House has long been known as the place where Charlotte welcomes the world.  The welcome mat just got a little larger, and we are here to help!

GINTER FOUNDATION AWARDS THREE-YEAR GRANT TO IMMIGRATION LAW CLINIC
We are pleased to announce a three-year grant award of $45,000 per year from the Ginter Foundation to support the work of our immigration law clinic.  The Ginter Foundation helped "birth" the clinic by providing seed funding in 2002 to create the Ginter Immigration Law Clinic at International House and has continued to offer significant support in the following years.  Our legal team has been able to serve thousands of low-income immigrants and refugees because of the generosity of the Ginter Foundation, and we are deeply appreciative of their partnership and support.

Thank you, Ginter Foundation!

Belk Foundation Awards Grant for Rising Readers Summer Program

International House is pleased  to announce a recent grant award of

$40,000 from the Belk Foundation for "Rising Readers", our 2015 summer program for children who do not speak English at home.  "Rising Readers" is offered in partnership with CMS and has shown remarkable success in helping immigrant children maintain reading skills and English fluency during the summer so that they won't fall behind their peers.

Katie Belk Morris visits our Rising Readers program.

In 2014, this free six-week summer program helped 232 rising first through third graders at four CMS elementary schools. Our goal is to expand the program to six schools in 2015.

"Summer learning loss is a challenge for many students, but even more so for English language learning children", says Johanna Anderson, the Foundation's Executive Director.  "The Belk Foundation is focused on helping students read at or above grade level by the 3rd grade, and programs like Rising Readers are a critical part of reaching that goal."

The Belk Foundation has been a key partner since 2011 in the growth and success of the Rising Readers program, and we are most grateful for their generous support.
