From Immigrant to Entrepreneur to Citizen:

An International House Success Story

Seven years ago, Tihomir left his home country and was on his way to Chicago to continue his culinary education.  Along the way, he decided to stop and visit a friend in Charlotte.  He immediately fell in love with the town, particularly the trees and the friendly people, and, as the saying goes, the rest is history.

"Charlotte is a modern town, but with a country style", he explains.   "People, they say, 'Hi. How are you.'  And they smile.  Everywhere you go."

When you ask Tihomir  why he wanted to come to America in the first place, his eyes light up and he laughs.   "The food channel!  I watched cooking shows all the time and those schools on TV were amazing.  I wanted to come to culinary schools in the U.S. and be the master!"

Armed with his passion for cooking, Tihomir  started working as a cook at a local restaurant.   The work was good but almost immediately he dreamed of something more.  "I used to drink coffee with friends and tell them, 'Someday I will have a restaurant here.  I'm going to have a place here.'  I felt it."

His dream of owning his own place, however, was nearly derailed before it could get started.   In 2010 Tihomir  found himself needing to apply for permanent residence status but with very little time to get all the paperwork assembled and approved.

US Foreign Policy"

Mr. Kweskin's presentation will focus on the US-Kurdistan relationship that spans back to the 1960s and how, and why, and when, it has transformed over the decades. He will also briefly outline and discuss the history of the Kurdish people (in Iraq), their nationalist aspirations, and the pros-and cons of a Kurdish State in the Middle East.

Join us for this extraordinarily timely and important conversation.

TOP TEN REASONS TO COME TO OUR 26th ANNUAL GALA!

The time is fast approaching for the social extravaganza of the season, International House's 26th Annual Benefit Gala! We are dusting off our dancing shoes as we get ready for our signature fundraising event that raises over $100,000 each year for International House programs and services.

This year, we will be going Down Under as we celebrate the country of Australia on October 18th with "No Worries, Mate!" It takes a village to plan an event of this magnitude, and we couldn't possibly have done it without our talented and hard-working Gala Committee, Co- Chaired by Gretchen Brown and Janet Riehle. We also want to thank our corporate partners and the individual donors whose generous support sustains the important work that we do in the community every day.

Haven't bought a ticket, yet? Let me offer 10 reasons why you won't want to miss this year's festivities!

1. An elegant meal, excellent wine, and great company at the beautiful Westin Charlotte.

2. Aussie entertainment with the authentic sounds of the aboriginal didgeridoo!

3. A photo booth with hats and props so you and your friends can snap fun shots to remember the evening!

4. Dancing with the Stars.... of International House that is!

5. An updated mobile bidding process for our silent auction so you can conveniently bid from your own mobile phone!

6. Many great live and silent auction items, including fabulous trips, and

7. Exotic vacations at a condo in Sydney, Australia, or Turkey!

8. Tickets to theater, dance performances, opera and museums, and

9. Dazzling pieces of jewelry from Perry's at SouthPark and Haack Diamonds, artwork, gift certificates, fabulous baskets and much more!

10. AND THE BEST REASON OF ALL: Your ticket purchase supports the programs and services that International House provides to Charlotte's international and immigrant community. So, come and join us for a fun evening for a great cause. You'll be glad you did!
