International House works hard every day to build understanding, create global connections, and help new arrivals learn English, achieve U.S. citizenship, and become fully integrated members of our community and country.

Our summer goal is $20,000. Please consider a gift that will make a difference in someone's life.  Gifts of any amount are welcomed and appreciated. Donate by clicking on the button below;

Summer Youth Tutoring Program off to a Great Start!

Our Youth English Tutoring Program (YETP) is off to an exciting start!  On June 23rd, we kicked off our fifth summer of YETP.

For the next 6 weeks, our teams of tutors and teachers will be working at four local schools to improve the English fluency and literacy of about 250 children from non-English speaking families.

This summer, YETP is taking place at Merry Oaks, Pinewood, Montclaire,  and Nations Ford Elementary Schools.  Each of these schools serves many students who come from high poverty backgrounds where English is not spoken at home.

BB&T Lighthouse Project Brings Technology to

 IH Education Programs

Thanks to BB&T for their
 Lighthouse Project Grant!

International House was recently awarded a BB&T Lighthouse Project Grant that is bringing technology to our education programs!

Through the Lighthouse Project, BB&T purchased and donated  laptop computers to be used by our ESL students so that they can  access on-line language learning labs which have been shown to improve English fluency. BB&T's company-wide service effort combines financial support and BB&T employee service hours to non-profits as a way for the company to fulfill their mission of improving the communities they serve.

BB&T employees learned how to use the laptops and on-line programs and then trained our ESL tutors.   The impact of the Lighthouse Project will carry on through each semester as we continue to meet the needs of those who want to learn English.

We are extremely grateful to BB&T,  BB&T Project Coordinator Stephani Walker, and the BB&T employees who chose to spend their volunteer hours with us!  Thank you!

Help Us Welcome the World.  Volunteer as a Home Host for our International Visitors!

International House is delighted to be hosting a group of Turkish judges and lawyers through the Charlotte School of Law (Aug 17-22) and a group of disability rights and healthcare advocates  from Georgia through the Open World Program  (Sept 19-27).

As part of their experience in Charlotte, they are eager to spend time with American families, and we are seeking families and individuals to host these distinguished guests.   It's a wonderful way to experience new cultures and make friends from around the world!

Celebrating World Refugee Day at  the Shamrock Center

International House celebrated World Refugee Day with an "Eat and Greet" program at the Shamrock Center.

In collaboration with The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee, International House offers a monthly educational program for recent immigrants to Charlotte.  In June we took our program to The Shamrock Senior Center which serves many elderly immigrants and refugees.

We had a great time with lunch, dancing, and an informative presentation on Public Safety by Officer Danny Hernandez of the Charlotte Police Department.

IH Volunteer Coordinator, Diana Rojas, leads residents from the Shamrock Center in a celebration of dance.

Busy Times for Citizen Diplomacy!

Staff at our Citizen Diplomacy Program (CDP) have been busy!

Our most recent international visitors were a group of Investigative Journalists (pictured) from six European, Middle-Eastern, and African countries.   Early in the spring, we also had delegations from Zambia/Zimbabwe, Russia, and Iraq.

Coming up - performing artists from Russia, a group of lawyers and judges from Turkey,  a youth leadership delegation from South America, disability rights and healthcare advocates and activists from the Republic of Georgia,  a second group of Zambian and Zimbabwean Professional Fellows, and a group of bankers and businessmen from Afghanistan.

All these dynamic visitors provide fascinating cultural interchange between people of other countries and the citizens of Charlotte.   It's one more reason why International House is the place "where Charlotte welcomes the world!"

Make Plans to Join Us for our 26th Annual Gala October 18th!

G'DAY MATES! It's time for another installment of Fun Facts about Australia so that when YOU come to the gala (don't forget - Saturday October 18 at the Westin) you'll be "in the know" about our featured country.

"How did Australia get its name, anyway?" Glad you asked. The name "Australia" comes from the Latin term Terra Australis meaning "land of the south". Often known as Terra Australis Incognita, i.e. "the unknown land of the South", it was the name given long ago to the unknown continent believed to exist south of the equator.

"Do people have kangaroos and koalas in their backyards?" As a general rule, no. If you live in a city or town it's not likely you'll see koalas or kangaroos, but if you live in the BUSH (country) or perhaps on a farm you are much more likely to have wild kangaroos or wallabies (close relatives of kangaroos) around. Kangaroos are common in the OUTBACK (very rural areas). Koalas are shy and live entirely on eucalyptus leaves, so rarely have any reason to come out of their trees. It's hard to see them in the wild.

"Can you recommend some good Australian movies?" There are many.

International House Launches
New Summer ESL Program

Our Summer ESL course is designed for adult learners who have a very basic proficiency of English.

Led by Davidson Community Engagement Fellow Erin Nieusma (herself fluent in English, Spanish, French and Arabic), the class offers a welcoming environment to adults who need to build from the most basic foundations  in order to improve their English.

The class is a small, intimate group, providing a safe space for these adult learners to master English at their own pace, and to feel comfortable as they practice their developing literacy and language abilities.

Do You Believe?

I recently made a presentation about International House at a local rotary club meeting. Afterwards, one of the members came up to me and exclaimed, "Wow!  I saw your financials in your annual report. I am amazed at how much you guys do with a very modest budget. It's really impressive!"

It's true. International House serves thousands of people every year through our immigration law clinic, education programs, cultural events, and international visitor programs, and we do it on a small budget through the hard work of a small dedicated staff and many great volunteers. We are able to survive and grow because of the support of people like you who believe in the importance of what we do.

We have just launched our summer fundraising campaign and hope you will take a moment to think about the value of International House to the Charlotte community, and indeed to the world.  Does our work reflect what you believe to be true?

Do you believe that Charlotte is richer for its global connections and our diverse international communities?  Do you think our world is a more peaceful place when citizens of different countries share a meal, exchange ideas, and learn from one another? Do you believe the words of the Statue of Liberty still ring true: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free"?  Do you want to see compassionate assistance offered to those who have escaped danger and hardship and are working hard to learn English and become self-sufficient citizens?

If so, then we hope you believe in the power of what International House has been doing every day since 1981.  Today's economic climate is not kind to nonprofits. International House receives no United Way funding and cannot survive on private or government grants alone. The generosity of our supporters is critical for us to continue to be the place where Charlotte welcomes the world.  We know there are many of you out there who believe in us!  Please take a moment to make your gift today!
