Tri Color Bar Client Profile: ESL Student, Volunteer, Mother, Entrepreneur : Camila Ceballos!

Camila Ceballos moved to the U.S. from her native Columbia 13 years ago.  After spending a few years in Florida, Camila was uprooted by Hurricane Katrina, and the winds of change delivered her to Charlotte - fortunately for our community!

Camila Ceballos

Camila initially got involved with International House in 2013, through the Adult ESL class. She needed to learn English to further her career as a graphic designer. Although she admits that English was difficult to learn at an older age, she felt it was important in order to take full advantage of
life here in the U.S.

After her introduction to International House, she decided that she wanted to give back to the organization that had helped her achieve so much, "I want to give my time  to International House as a present because I feel grateful for the nice people."

Now, not only does she get to provide support to Charlotte's thriving international community, she gets to show her children - ages 12, 10 and 8 -  the importance of giving back to their community.   Camila has also volunteered with the Latin American Coalition reading Spanish books to young children.  As she said,  "I want to teach my kids about volunteering because it is a part of the American culture, and it feels good because it gives opportunities to Latinos".

International House is proud to help dynamic, productive, and energetic people like Camila every day.   Together, we are working to make Charlotte a better home for all of us.

From Our
Executive Director

International House has been part of the Charlotte landscape for over thirty years. But although we've been around for awhile, we are always eager to try something new!

One of the best new things happening soon is the launch of our Young Professional group on April 29th, YP@IH. We believe there are many "twenty and thirty-something" Charlotteans who would be interested in building global connections and supporting International House's mission and work. In fact, a small core group was so convinced this is true that they have been hard at work for the past few months putting a structure into place and organizing programs and events for 2014.

Ollie Chandhok has assumed the inaugural role of YP@IH President and has gathered a great executive team to support him. Ollie is the Regional Audience Director with American City Business Journals and also the immediate past-Chair of the Charlotte Chamber Young Professionals. As President of YP@IH, he will also sit on the International House Board of Directors.

We are excited about the energy and ideas that members of this new Young Professional group will contribute to International House's work in Charlotte and around the world. If you are interested in learning more about what it means to be part of YP@IH, please join us for our free launch event and reception on April 29th at Chima's. Hope to see you there!

Estonian Filmmakers

The Estonian Ministry of Culture has launched a new, long-term strategy to develop the country's film industry.  Members of this delegation will travel to Charlotte to learn more about the city's burgeoning film industry including: film development, production, distribution, education and audience development.

One of the delegation's goals upon return to Estonia, is to create a connection between the public and private sectors in order to foster a common understanding about the future of Estonian film production.

Egypt: Disability Rights

This progam will bring together visitors from Egypt working to empower the disabled through policy, programs and education.

Since 1975, Egypt has had a law organizing the rights of disabled persons, including rehabilitation services, rights to work and receive care, and the establishment of a higher council of rehabilitation. However, there is no law protecting the rights of disabled persons or prohibiting the discrimination against them.

Members of this delegation will visit Charlotte and other cities in the US to learn about state and federal laws pertaining to the welfare of the disabled, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as introduce them to the organizations that raise awareness of disability issues in this country.

Doorways

Doorways is a group of international women meeting on the first Wednesday of each month for social and cultural exchanges. The next Doorways meeting will be an off-site trip to Johnson & Wales on April 9, 2014. Registration has closed for that event due to limited spaces.
