From the Executive Director:
International House to Join New Charlotte Task Force

As a leading organization in the Charlotte international community, International House has been invited to participate in the City of Charlotte's newly created Immigrant Integration Task Force. Created by City Council resolution in November, the Task Force is intended to be an inter-agency effort that will evaluate and recommend ways to maximize immigrants' economic and civic contributions to Charlotte.

We are very pleased to be included in this initiative along with other community stakeholders who are representative of the diversity of people living and working in the Queen City. The Task Force will soon begin a research and discovery process that will be used to craft recommendations for creating City services and partnerships that will help immigrants better integrate into the community. The Task Force will also make recommendations regarding the creation of opportunities for economic and civic contributions of immigrants. >> Read More

Proud New Citizen Becomes Registered Nurse

Mary* was brought to the U.S. from Peru when she was only 7 years old. She grew up and attended school in the United States. She didn't know that she was any different than her schoolmates. She participated in all school events, just like all other children. However her prospects for either education or career were limited without a "green card".

In high school, Mary and Minh* fell in love. They dated for many years. They attended proms together. Minh is also a member of an immigrant family. He was born in France, but  is of Vietnamese origin. His parents were both born and raised in Vietnam. He became a naturalized U.S. Citizen in 2002.

Mary and Minh were married in 2007. They now have two sons together. Mary came to the IH legal clinic in 2009 and has been our client since that time. When Mary became a Permanent Resident, she was able to attend the school she wanted and find employment. She became a registered nurse and now works in a hospital. Mary became a naturalized citizen of the United States on August 15, 2013. Despite all the difficulties she encountered, she managed to graduate from a nursing school and find a job she really enjoys. She and Minh have two beautiful boys.

* Names and countries of origin have been changed to protect client identities.
