From the Executive Director:
Getting to know the "Girl Next Door"
|
 | | Nina Davuluri |
Nina Davuluri, recently crowned the first Indian-American woman to win the Miss America Pageant, was interviewed by the Wall Street Journal about her experience. Davuluri spoke about her feelings of elation and pride, as well as her sadness at seeing the racist tweets that followed her crowning. She also talked about her response to a tough interview question during the pageant: "So that's why I said what I did, about always viewing Miss America as the 'Girl Next Door,' and that the girl next door is evolving as the diversity of America evolves. She's not who she was 10 years ago, and she's not going to be the same 10 years down the road."
At International House, we believe that the "Girl Next Door" has many faces, and they are all beautiful. Our society is enriched by the diversity of cultures that are part of the fabric of who we are as a nation. This is why America is the country we have chosen to feature at our 25th Anniversary Gala. As Martin Luther King put it, "We may have come here by different boats. But we are all on the same boat now." >>> Read More

Gala Committee Hard At Work!
|
International House is thrilled to celebrate its 25th Anniversary Benefit Gala - "America the Beautiful" on October 26! The event promises to bring outstanding regional cuisine, music, dance, a luxury raffle, and an amazing live auction. We cannot wait to see many of you at this signature event and would like to dedicate this article to our wonderful Gala Committee, a group of women who devote countless hours to the planning and execution of this outstanding event!
The Gala Committee is comprised of twenty-five women, who come from all over the world. Several of these women, such as Kimm Jolly, Sheila Bennett and Josane Calvert, are former International House staff members and have been on the committee for decades. Many agree with Josane who feels that the most rewarding aspect of her job as Gala Committee Chair is "knowing that the money raised will provide unrestricted funds for International House to continue providing all its wonderful programs and services to the Charlotte community."
International House could not agree more with committee member Janet Riehle's thoughts on why the Gala continues to be a success. "We are a team of dedicated ladies, all from different cultures and walks of life, who manage to use our differences to complement one another. We all have respect for one another's opinions and know that in the end we get to party at the Gala and marvel at our achievement." International House is very thankful for this exceptional group of women, and looks forward to seeing the Charlotte international and philanthropic community at the 25th Anniversary Benefit Gala. International House Helps Bring About Sister
Park Agreement Between US and Thailand
| |
What started as a typical International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) visit ended as an extraordinary event. International House (IH) was asked to coordinate the visit of nine park managers from Thailand through the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), a premier professional exchange program coordinated by the U.S. Department of State's. When IH Program Director Johnelle Causwell arrived at the Knoxville Airport to pick up the group, which included Superintendent Krissada Homsud of the Khao Yai National Park, no one knew that the trip would end with such exciting news. Unbeknownst to the group, officials in the Thai and US governments were finalizing wording for the first Sister Park agreement for both the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and The Khao Yai National Park.
Although not exactly twins, the two parks share a number of similar resources and protected area management and operational concerns. The significant biodiversity of both Khao Yai and Great Smoky Mountains is at the center of their mission and programs. Both parks are the most visited National Parks within their respective countries, which presents similar challenges associated with high visitor use, along with potential impacts due to adjacent land use and development. Both parks are popular for spectacular wildlife viewing, streams and waterfalls, and lush mountain forests. >>> Read More
