September Updates

From the Executive Director:
Now is the Time!

Summer is waning but not the energy here at International House! Staff working with our citizen diplomacy program are furiously preparing for the upcoming visits of 6 groups this fall from countries around the world. Our education staff are fielding scores of requests from immigrants interested in enrolling in our fall ESL classes which start in a couple of weeks. A new partnership with the Levine Museum means our ESL students will have some wonderful field trip opportunities while also learning about Charlotte history and culture. Our legal team continues to serve hundreds of refugees and immigrants with a 90% case success rate, and our board of directors just embarked on a strategic planning process to consider our direction for the future. So many good things are happening! But, like most nonprofit organizations, International House cannot do all of this alone. We absolutely depend on the financial support of our friends and funding partners in order to keep building global understanding and help Charlotte's growing international population successfully integrate into our community.

This is the end of our summer appeal, and I would like to thank all of you who have already responded with a gift. You are much appreciated! If you have not gotten around to it yet, I hope you will take a quick moment to send in a check or donate through our website: www.ihclt.org. Donations of any amount are welcome!

We don't have telethons or on-air fund drives, and we won't fill up your email inboxes with repeated requests. Our fundraising appeals happen only twice a year. So, please take a moment to consider how International House makes a difference to so many lives here in Charlotte and around the world and then make your gift. We need your support in order to continue being the place where Charlotte welcomes the world!

International House tapped to Host

Open World Turkish Judicial Groups

Mr. Jasik with Citizen Diplomacy Program Director
Johnelle Causwell and Associate Carole Ward

US Department of State Judicial Liaison John Jasik Visits Charlotte to Formally Initiate Partnership

International House has hosted many Open World groups over the past two decades including the Rumsfeld Fellows, Ukrainian Mayors and Deputy Governors from Russia. Starting in December 2013, International House will collaborate with the Charlotte School of Law to welcome almost ten groups of Judicial officials from Turkey over the course of 18 months. Open World is one of the most effective U.S. exchange programs for countries of the post-Soviet era. Begun as a pilot program in 1999 and established as a permanent agency in late 2000, the Center conducts the first and only international exchange agency in the U.S. Legislative Branch and, as such, has enabled more than 17,000 current and future leaders from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan to meaningfully engage and interact with Members of Congress, Congressional staff, and thousands of other Americans, many of whom are the delegates' direct professional counterparts.

Turkey has just recently joined the roster of Open World countries, and International House is honored to partner with the Charlotte School of Law to welcome these upcoming groups of judicial officials to our fair city of Charlotte. Before arriving in Charlotte, the Turkish delegation will have an intensive orientation in Washington, DC, where they will tour the Supreme Court. Mr. John Jasik, Judicial Liaison for the Department of State, visited Charlotte last week to officially impart the news of International House's involvement with hosting the upcoming Turkish Judicial delegations!
