Tango and Tours- A Big Thank You

to International House 2012 Major Donors!

A special presentation to Tony and Lakana Bikhazi

About 80 people gathered in the Midwood auditorium on June 14th for an evening celebration in honor of International House's 2012 major donors ($250 and up) to our capital and operating campaigns. Guests sipped wine, tasted hors d'oeuvres, and toured International House's new home at Midwood International & Cultural Center, a home made possible through the generosity of many of those attending. Special presentations were made to Tony and Lakana Bikhazi, co-chairs of the capital campaign; Casey and Anke Mermans, major supporters of International House's ESL and educational programming for many years; and Al and Donna de Molina (in absentia) who made a three-year gift supporting a staff position in the legal clinic.  Donors to the capital campaign who contributed $500 or more were also featured on the "Hall of Honor," including several who had contributed at levels that included naming rights for various classrooms and office spaces. The evening concluded with a fiery tango performance by Grace and Tao. We are deeply grateful to all those who have made it possible for International House to provide critical services to Charlotte's international community. Thank you for helping us make a world of difference!

Individuals and families will welcome guests into their homes, serve as cultural ambassadors in the evenings and weekends, assist with transportation on the weekdays with drop-offs at International House around 9:00am and pick-ups around 5:00pm (carpools can be arranged), and provide breakfast and dinner. I Have a Dream: Meet Julio

Family trauma made Julio's* teenage years chaotic, but as a young adult he realized that he could be successful and that U.S. citizenship would be a must. Julio's mother fled Colombia as an asylee and wound up in Ecuador and then Spain where she married his father. When Julio was four years old, he and his family arrived in the United States, but the stress of the refugee experience took its toll on his father. When Julio was seven years old, he returned to Spain with his mother and baby sister. Then at age 12, he returned to the United States to live with his father who had remarried, become a U.S. citizen, and had a new family. With his father working long hours and Julio having significant conflict with his step-mother, his mother's relatives tried to help by taking care of him on the weekends. >> Read More
