Everyone at International House is thrilled with the move to Midwood International & Cultural Center, but no group more than the staff of our Immigration Law Clinic!

After 10 years of working in cramped quarters spread throughout our old location, our legal team is thoroughly enjoying their spacious new offices.   Each of our five staff members has her own office allowing more much easier collaboration on client cases.

In addition, the legal team is now able to meet privately with all clients in an environment that is quieter and which affords greater client confidentiality.   Their beautiful new offices will allow our Law Clinic to more efficiently and effectively handle the hundreds of cases they take on each year.

In 2012, the Clinic opened a record 482 cases - an increase of over 100% since 2008. During the past year, International House helped 48 clients achieve citizenship.   Also, 131 of our clients became permanent residents and 76 clients benefited from help with employment authorization, travel documents, and replacement of lost documents.

Anne Crotty, Director of the Legal Clinic is enthusiastic about the possibilities at Midwood.   "We are truly excited about our new work environment. Already the quality of the service we can provide to our clients has improved and we think 2013 will be our best year yet.  Thanks to all the people who made our move to Midwood possible!"

Who's in the House?  Russia, Ukraine, and Syria!
          Three Flags

Citizen Diplomacy Program staff at International House are preparing to welcome three international delegations to Charlotte during February. Groups from Russia, Ukraine, and Syria will be visiting our region as part of the International Visitor Leadership Program sponsored by the U.S. State Department.

Our visitors from Russia are part of a 2013 Open World delegation and will be staying in Charlotte February 15th through the 23rd.  The theme of their program is "Accountable Governance" and they will be meeting with city government officials as well as legal and judicial professionals.

Our group from Ukraine will be staying in Charlotte for four days beginning February 13th. They will be meeting with local government officials and private sector experts to learn more about the U.S. Criminal Justice System.  On February 18th our visitors from Syria will arrive for a 4 day stay. The Syrian delegation will be comprised of six emerging financial leaders and will be meeting with banking, insurance, and entrepreneurial executives.

Everyone is invited to meet the visiting Russian Delegation during our popular "Who's in the House" event series on Wednesday February 20th at 6pm- 7:30pm at the Midwood International and Cultural Center on 1817 Central Ave.

Chinese Conversation Hour is Back!

Chinese Symble for Peace

Good news!  Our Chinese Conversation Hour will return in March for any area residents wishing to practice this ancient and venerable language.   Chinese is spoken by over 1.3 billion people - and you can be one of them!

The sessions will start Tuesday March 12th from 6-7pm in Room 202 of International House.  Thereafter, the group will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month.   There is no registration required, and this program is free to the public.    Conversation hours are not structured classes but are informal gatherings of  both native and non-native speakers.   The setting is casual and fun - a wonderful way to spend an hour with friends and practice a language at the same time!

We are also looking for additional volunteer facilitators who can assist  with the Chinese Conversation Hour .  If you or someone you know  is interested, please contact our Director of Education Gail Johnson at gjohnson@ihclt.org.

International House currently offers Conversation Hours in 8 different languages - Spanish, English, French, Portuguese, Japanese, Russian, German, and Chinese.   We would love to have you join us - especially the German and Russian sessions which are looking to increase their attendance.   For a complete schedule of  Conversation Hours, click here>>

Our Newest Citizen!

Why We Do What We Do ...

Rebecca New Citizen
Rebecca Gioha(L) and International House volunteer Sandy Hill

Congratulations to one of our newest citizens - Rebecca Gioha!

For the past two years, Rebecca, a refugee from Libya, and Sandy Hill, her dedicated International House volunteer tutor, have been working on her English language skills and the many steps required to acquire citizenship. As a result, on January 8th of this year, Rebecca's and Sandy's hard work and determination finally paid off when Rebecca received her U.S. citizenship!

Congratulations to Rebecca from all of us at International House and a huge "Thank You!" to Sandy for being with her every step of the way.

Help Preserve Funding for Citizen Diplomacy

As Congress debates potential budget cuts, the future of citizen diplomacy in Charlotte may be directly effected.   In 2012, International House hosted 234 international visitors from 81 countries. Through home stays, local presentation events and professional appointments, citizen diplomacy has not only contributed to our local economy but to the cultural awareness and diversity of our community.

As Charlotte's global profile continues to grow, it is extremely important
that Citizen Diplomacy programs continue to receive funding.
The importance of these programs was made even more evident  by the experience of  Pushpa Basnet of Nepal.   Pushpa  arrived in Charlotte last year  as a member of International House's International Visitor Leadership Program( IVLP) delegation.   Through contacts made here in Charlotte, Pushba's efforts to provide education opportunities for children of incarcerated women received widespread attention and she ultimately became CNN's Hero of the Year.

You can help to keep funding for citizen diplomacy programs by getting in touch with your Congressional Representative or Senator and reiterating the importance of keeping funding for programs such as the US State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program. Senators representing North Carolina are Kay Hagan and Richard Burr. You can also find out who your Congressional Representative is by logging on to www.House.Gov/Representative/Find and typing in your zip code. One small act could transform the lives of many.

Brazil Youth Ambassadors

The Youth Ambassadors Program with Brazil is pleased to extend an opportunity to talented American young leaders and adult mentors for a three-week summer leadership program in Brazil.   The program will be accepting  13 American teenagers ages 15-17 and one adult mentor as part of this program.  The Program aims to develop a cadre of young adults in Brazil and the U.S. who have a strong sense of civic responsibility, a commitment to community development, and an awareness of current and global issues.

International House hosted 9 amazing teenagers from Brazil in January who were part of this exchange program and it was a wonderful experience.

 FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
WOW!

As I reflect back on our Open House here at Midwood International & Cultural Center on January 27th, just one word comes to mind:   Wow!

It was a glorious night filled with the smiling faces of over 450 friends and neighbors wandering the hallways of this magnificent old building.   Our visitors were treated to office tours by all of our fellow tenants, yummy treats in the gymnasium, and best of all, wonderful cultural demonstrations of Ethiopian, Bosnian, and Indian music and dance.   In addition, our long-time friends at the Japanese Association delighted our visitors with the beauty and grace of Japanese floral arranging.   From start to finish, it was a magical evening.

Watching the crowds surge through the hallways, I experienced first-hand the amazing synergy that our new Midwood location will provide International House.   All of our co-tenants were excited to participate and made amazing contributions to the great success of the Open House.   Clearly, our concept of a multi-cultural campus with a wide array of varied and diverse organizations working together to achieve a common goal of improving our Charlotte area community has come to fruition.

And all of us at International House are thrilled beyond words.

There are so many people to thank for making a night like this possible.   Thank you to all the donors to our Capital Campaign who gave so generously to fund this dream.  A special appreciation to our Capital Campaign Co-Chairs, Tony and Lakana Bikhazi. We simply couldn't have done this without you!

Thank you to our Board of Directors who wrestled with the complexity of this tremendous undertaking and succeeded where so many other organizations may have been overwhelmed.   Thanks to our staff and volunteers who have worked many extra hours during and after the move to make our new home a warm and inviting place already. And thanks to all of our wonderful new neighbors in the Plaza Midwood area who have reached out to welcome us to the neighborhood.   We feel like we've made so many new friends in a very short period of time.

And there are two other thank you's that I especially want to share with you. First, a huge and heartfelt thank you to our intrepid board member Monte Ritchey who gave himself fully and completely to making this improbable dream a reality. It was Monte's vision and determination over the course of the past two years that led all of us through the most daunting moments when no one else believed that a non-profit could tackle the job of converting a 40,000 sq ft high school into a multi-cultural campus.   Monte never gave up. He never wavered in his commitment to the project. And he has, more than any other single person, made this moment possible.   Thank you, Monte!

Finally, we want to extend our love, appreciation, and thanks to St. Johns Baptist Church.   It was St. Johns that helped birth International House over 30 years ago.   And it was St. Johns that provided us with the use of the Staten House of Hawthorne Lane for the past 25 years.   Without their support, International House would not have been in a position to make this exciting transition to a new facility. But it was not a transition without a few bittersweet moments as we packed up and said goodbye to the grand old Staten House.   Thank you, St. Johns, and thank you, Staten House. You will always be an important part of our legacy.

And now - on to the future!   I cannot tell you how excited all of us are about the possibilities in our new location.   There has already been whirlwind of activity, growth, and increased community involvement as a result of the move - and that will only increase with time.

Now, more than ever, International House will be the place Where Charlotte Welcomes the World!
