| Let the Conversations Begin |
It's never too late to make a "new" New Year's resolution - so why not join us for one of our very popular Conversation Hours? Each week International House hosts groups for individuals wanting to learn, and improve on, their foreign language skills.
We currently have Conversation Hours for French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and English. These informal groups meet once a week for an hour and are the perfect way to practice language skills in a fun, supportive, and informative atmosphere. Each group is moderated by a native speaker and people of all abilities are encouraged to join us. Groups will begin meeting on January 7th and you can click here for a complete list of classes and times for 2013. For those already participating in this program, please note that evening facilitators will be contacted with directions on how to access our new building at 1817 Central Avenue. All other facilitators and participants may park in the back of the building, enter through the back door, and go to Room 202. See you there! |
Brazil is in the House!
|
This month, International House is excited to be hosting the Youth Leadership Ambassadors from Brazil. This dynamic group of 9 young Brazilians will spend 12 days in Charlotte to participate in community service and civic initiatives and leadership opportunities. They are an extraordinary group selected from over 17,000 applicants to be the best ambassadors of high school youth from Brazil. The Brazil Youth Ambassadors Program is sponsored through the U.S. State Department in collaboration with International House and World Learning.
Their visit to Charlotte will culminate with a Who's in the House? event to be hosted by International House at our brand new offices in the Midwood International and Cultural Center.
The event will be Thursday January 24th from 6-7:30 pm. Please plan to come meet our dynamic visitors as they share via music, dance, videos and photos about one of the most rapidly developing countries in the Western Hemisphere - in addition to being the host country for both the 2014 Men's Soccer World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Light refreshments will be served during this fun opportunity for international learning and dialogue.

A New Year at Midwood!
"Another planet." This is the phrase that one International House staff member used recently to describe her lovely office at our new home in the Midwood International & Cultural Center. Indeed, we all feel that we have arrived at a wonderful new place that we never would have thought possible! Our legal team is already seeing clients in private offices, a huge improvement over the crowded quarters at our old house where there was insufficient space for confidential discussions. Classrooms are being readied for upcoming Conversation Hours, Doorways meetings, and ESL and citizenship classes. Packing boxes are gradually being emptied. A striking new sign has been installed at the front of the building on Central Avenue, and visitors are grinning when they walk through our doors for the first time.
But one of the best things about being at Midwood is that International House is now part of a community. The Japanese Association of Charlotte, One Ethiopian Community, and Grameen America are getting settled in their offices upstairs. The League of Women Voters and the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Cultural Center have just begun to move in to their rooms on the main level, and the Language Academy, Sankofa Gallery, and Universal Institute for Successful Aging in Charlotte (UISAC) are preparing to open soon. Other interested cultural and international organizations are contacting us about leasing some of the remaining rooms.
The future is full of so many emerging possibilities for creative collaboration and shared programming! For instance, many of the immigrants and refugees served by our legal team can now be directed upstairs to Grameen America, a micro-lending institution that assists low-income entrepreneurs who traditionally do not have access to larger banks. Members of One Ethiopian Community and UISAC (which focuses on Indian and South Asian communities) can walk down the hall to attend ESL classes at International House or inquire about services at our legal clinic. The Language Academy is right around the corner for members of our Language Conversation Hours who want structured lessons for learning the language of their choice.
It is indeed an exciting time and a wonderful way to start the new year. We invite you to be part of this "new planet" that is now our home.
Please join us for our welcoming celebration and open house on January 27th. Hope to see you there!
