Difficult Journey Has Fairytale Ending
Read Jessica Sharp's story about her experience at the International House Ginter Immigration Law Clinic.
Our story is like a fairy tale - I found my Prince Charming. The difficult immigration process is what I paid for this treasure. I came to the US on a work and travel program, CCUSA (Camp Counselor USA) on 11/29/2005 and stayed at the YMCA in Black Mountain, NC. Mitchell was a dorm director there, and we both lived in the dormitory there. We quickly became friends and started dating on Valentine's Day. Read the rest of Jessica's story here. |

From the Executive Director
In a prior life, I worked for several years on staff with the N.C. Council of Churches, an ecumenical organization bringing communities of faith together on issues of justice and peace. While there, I assisted in drafting the Council's position statement on compre-hensive immigration reform. It was endorsed by leaders of many mainline judicatories who under-stood that our current immigration system is broken and that piecemeal, enforcement-only legislation at the state level only makes a bad problem worse. Unauthorized immigration is a federal problem with a federal solution.
The Council recently posted an article with thoughts about the one year anniversary of the controversial Arizona law, SB 1070. I offer it to you for reflection, as it appears that this test case for when states take immigration policy into their own hands has received failing marks. North Carolinians would do well to heed these lessons when considering the best way to move forward.
(Posted by the NC Council of Churches, May 17, 2011)
In a hyper-partisan era characterized by failures of leadership across the board, perhaps no single issue illustrates govern-ment gridlock better than immigration. Everyone knows that our current immigration system is broken. Year after year, proposals to help fix the system have been introduced in Washington, only to die without ever taking effect. Under-standably, many states feel they have been left no choice but to take action themselves.
So far, Arizona is the most famous test case for what happens when a state tries to take immigration policy into its own hands.
