"Charlotte University" - An Opportunity to Live, Learn and Grow
Community Leaders on CATS Bus

Krystel Green provides a walk-through demonstration of a CATS bus for participants of "Charlotte University: Live, Learn, Grow".

About 40 community leaders from Charlotte's immigrant population came together for lunch and learning on April 29th.  A newer version of International House's basic life skills training, "Live, Learn, Grow", this free luncheon and information session was a "teach the teacher" event providing immigrant leaders with important materials about transportation, housing, English classes, legal assistance, the CMS school system, and financial and lending opportunities here in Charlotte. more>>

Who's In the House?  Folks from around the World!Who's in House - Apr 2011

International House was filled with a curious crowd on April 25th to hear from some of our recent international visitors. An Egyptian professional from Cairo working with children with disabilities spoke about his internship at the Allegro Foundation, a local nonprofit in Charlotte. He also gave a moving testimony about what it meant personally to support  the recent peaceful protests in Egypt. Read more.

Naturalization Workshop

International House, in partnership with the Latin American Coalition, is holding a free, one-day Naturalization Workshop.  The workshop will give potential citizenship applicants an overview of the naturalization process, including a presentation from a local USCIS official and a mock interview.  Following the presentations, qualified paralegals will review the participants' applications to ensure that they are filled out correctly. Finally, the participants will have short consultations with an immigration attorney to determine if they will need further assistance on their cases.

The workshop will be held from 9:00 a.m until 1:00 p.m. on June 11, 2011. All interested in attending should call International House at 704.405.0962 or Latin American Coalition at 704.531.3848 to register.

A Surprising Bottom Line

May Day. It is not only a time of flowers and May Poles, but in many countries around the world; the first day of May is an occasion to celebrate the average worker, a global "Labor Day". Here in the United States, it has also become a time to lift up the gifts of immigrants to our society. But does the labor of immigrants in America help or hurt our bottom line?  more>>
