A Family Finds Help at International House

Read Maria Conteh's story about her family's experience at the International House Ginter Immigration Law Clinic.

Musa Conteh and familyWhen we first came to International House, the outlook was bleak. We were so scared; we thought Musa would be sent back to Africa, and I would have to learn how to farm. We hit a big roadblock in the legal process because we didn't know how Musa came to be here, since he had arrived at age 5. We didn't even know whether we should try to get records from USCIS which can be risky.  Our lowest point was when our baby Malachi was a few months old, and the government couldn't find Musa's entry documents.  Musa was holding Malachi, and we were both crying.  After we were drained of tears, we prayed and asked God to give International House the wisdom to help us.   Read more>>

Learn About the World with an Internship at International House

Caroleena - IH Intern

Read Caroleena's story about her internship with International House:

I began my internship in the Citizen Diplomacy program with Program Director Lara Printz in January 2011.  As this was my first internship, I was very nervous and did not know what to expect. I remember my heart pounding as I walked through the doors of International House, my first day on the job. So many things were running throught my head: Am I going to mess up? Is the other staff going to accept me? What if I'm in over my head?   more>>

Letters and Life of Benito Juárez

Benito Juarez EventInternational House and the Mexican Cultural Society commemorated the 205th anniversary of the Mexican President Benito Juárez with a special program on March 25th.

The program celebrated Mexican history and explored Juarez's life and thought. It included readings of some of his letters to famous international leaders at the time, such as Abraham Lincoln and Victor Hugo and was conducted in both Spanish and English.

Many thanks to Lucila Ruvalcaba for her leadership in organizing the event.

From the Executive Director

Denise Cumbee Long

Is Charlotte a global city?

This was the question posed to me recently by a local TV reporter. He was following up on the Democratic National Committee's announcement naming Charlotte as the site of their 2012 convention.

The question is an interesting one. more>>
