IH Staff Energized by NCIV Annual Meeting

Staff at NCIV Conference

L to R: Denise Cumbee Long, IH Executive Director; Ann Stock, Assistant Secretary of State; Lara Printz, IH CDP Director; Norma Jiron, IH CDP Coordinator

The National Council for International Visitors (NCIV) is a nonprofit membership organization that joins the Peace Corps in celebrating 50 years of leadership in citizen diplomacy in 2011. It is a nationwide network comprised of 92 community organizations which provide cultural and educational activities, as well as home hospitality, for foreign leaders and specialists participating in the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program and other exchange programs. International House is the umbrella organization for Charlotte's Council for International Visitors, one of three such CIV's in North Carolina. Last year, International House welcomed 240 international visitors, helping them learn best practices and see democracy in action while showcasing Charlotte and the United States.

International House Executive Director Denise Cumbee Long, Program Director Lara Printz, and Citizen Diplomacy and English Training Coordinator Norma Jiron, attended the NCIV Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. from February 16-19th.  They heard from the State Department's senior leadership, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy Judith McHale, and Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ann Stock, as well as a wide range of diplomats in regional and thematic briefings. It was also a time for professional networking with colleagues across the country, strengthening programming skills and building nonprofit and fundraising expertise.  Best of all, it was an exciting opportunity to celebrate years of citizen diplomacy that has linked people from around the world and humanized international relations

IH Clients Share Touching Testimonials  Clients, Staff, Volunteers

International House Board member Felix von Uklanski and his wife Candice Langston hosted a delightful reception at their home on February 23rd to raise awareness about the programs and work of International House and to allow community members to meet new Executive Director Denise Cumbee Long. The evening was well attended, and the food, drinks, and conversation were first class!

The highlights of the evening were the testimonials delivered by past clients and volunteers on how International House has impacted their lives for the better. A refugee from war-torn Sierra Leone spoke of his new U.S. citizenship and how he was now able to better support himself and his family. "International House lifted me up!" he said with a smile and raised arms. An architect from Brazil spoke of finding friendship and help with her English at the ESL class and English conversation hour. Immigrants from Colombia and Mexico shared their gratitude for the personal assistance provided by their tutors who were able to help them reach a level of English fluency that allowed them to navigate the complexities of life in a new land. Their tutors then gave their own accounts of how they felt enriched by the friendships that had blossomed. The stories were heartfelt and real, and all the attendees left with a better understanding of the value of International House to the wider Charlotte community.

Many thanks to Felix, Candice, and everyone who attended, especially the clients and volunteers who took the time to share their amazing stories.

February Citizenship Workshop a Resounding Success

In partnership with the Latin American Coalition, the Mecklenburg County Bar, and the Charlotte School of Law, International House sponsored a February workshop for immigrants seeking to understand their eligibility for U.S. citizenship. The workshop was generously hosted by the Muslim American Society.

During the workshop, North Carolina Immigration Attorneys, BIA Accredited Representatives and other volunteers from the community, collaborated to assist 20 participants in determining their eligibility for citizenship and reviewing their applications.

USCIS Officer Beslagic gave an informative overview on the process and requirements of applying for US Citizenship. In addition, the Muslim American Center provided excellent support in the form of volunteer assistance and a very hospitable facility to make it the most successful workshop yet.

Thanks to all for your continued involvement in providing such an empowering service to our community.

The Longest Running War in Africa

The war in northern Uganda has been called "the most neglected humanitarian emergency in the world today." For the past 23 years, the Lord's Resistance Army and the Government of Uganda have been waging a war that has left nearly two million innocent civilians caught in the middle. The Government's attempt to protect its citizens from this rebel militia has largely failed, resulting in an entire generation of youth that has never known peace.

Invisible Children is a non-profit organization that makes documentaries about the war-affected children in east Africa and tours these films around the world to educate the global community and to raise funds for the young people of Uganda who have been caught in the crosshairs of the conflict.

On March 20 at 1:30pm at St Peter Catholic Church in uptown Charlotte, Invisible Children will be showing their newest film, Tony, about their friend who grew up in Northern Uganda and whose whole life has been affected by this war. There will also be a Ugandan guest who will speak about how this war has directly affected her life.

March 20, 2011 - 1:30

From the Executive Director

Denise Cumbee Long

Humanizing International Relationships,

One Handshake at a Time

I'm very glad that I attended the National Council for International Visitors (NCIV) Annual Meeting.  Yes, it was great to hear Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in person, attend a private reception at the U.S. State Department, and enjoy the hospitality of the Romanian Ambassador and his staff at the Romanian Embassy.  Participating in regional briefings on U.S. policy and current affairs in Africa and the Middle East was exciting, too. But, I will have to say that the best part of attending my first NCIV national meeting was coming away with a much deeper appreciation of the impact of citizen diplomacy. Senator William Fulbright once said, "Educational exchange can turn nations into people, contributing as no other form of communication can to the humanizing of international relations".

In a world where suspicion and distrust can quickly lead to military engagement, international exchange programs provide a deep "human to human" connection that counters false perceptions and builds mutual understanding. As someone at the conference said, "It's hard to take up arms against a country when you personally know a family living there who has offered you hospitality and friendship." In that sense, the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is a vital investment in U.S. national security. The visits build enduring relationships between foreign leaders and U.S. decision makers. Firsthand exposure to U.S. democratic institutions can sometimes be the best way to "win hearts and minds". I was amazed to learn that more than 320 current and former heads of State and many other distinguished world leaders developed connections to the United States through IVLP. Some famous IVLP Alumni include, Dilma Rousseff, President of Brazil, Nicolas Sarkozy, President of France, Christian Wulff, President of Germany, and Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India. All of these world leaders were formerly participants in IVLP groups visiting Charlotte or other U.S. cities. They spent time in the homes of ordinary American citizens, perhaps sitting on a deck chatting about basketball after a meal of Southern-style barbecue!

I am proud of the Citizen Diplomacy programs at International House and how we have been able to engage hundreds of volunteers through the years who have offered home hospitality and presented a human face to an America that overseas visitors often know only through what is portrayed on the media. Last year, 117 Charlotte residents served as home and dinner hosts to international visitors, and 240 more volunteered as business hosts. This high level of community support has had a profound effect on leaders from around the world who go back to their home countries with new ideas, best practices, and a better opinion of the United States and its people.

There are many upcoming opportunities for your participation this spring and summer in one of our many International Visitor programs. Home and Dinner Hosts are especially needed. Let us know if you can help. We promise that you will have fun and make some new friends!  I invite you to celebrate your right, indeed your responsibility, as an individual citizen to help shape U.S. foreign relations "one handshake at a time".
