Greetings from our new Executive Director!

Denise Cumbee LongI am happy to be on board as the new Executive  Director of International House. It has been exciting to jump into the good work that happens here every day and to be part of such an impressive team of staff, board members, and volunteers.

My love for international connections began when I was a child. My family lived in Scotland and Switzerland for two years, and we traveled frequently in Europe. I remember playing one day with Italian children at an orphanage in Rome.  They were kind and friendly and took my hands to pull me into a circle where they were engaged in some kind of singing game.

That experience has stayed with me all of my life. It is symbolic of why I think the work we do here at International House is so important. We all want to be part of the circle; we all want to be included, valued, and appreciated for our own cultural uniqueness.

During these post-911 years as there has been an increase in anti-immigrant sentiment, International House has played a critical role in Charlotte. We build bridges, instead of walls. We help those who arrive here as strangers become integrated into the wider community as productive members of society. We create opportunities for intercultural understanding and friendship. We widen the circle and take the hands of those who are different, because we understand that differences are to be celebrated and not feared.

I am truly delighted to be joining this wonderful organization.  There is an old Irish proverb that says, "A good beginning is half the work."   I am committed to a good beginning as I partner with the many other friends and supporters of International House in widening the circle for all who call Charlotte home!

Board Member Receives Honor

Dr. Nini

Our own Dr. Nini RB Bautista de Garcia, International House Board Member, was named one of the Charlotte USA 20 Dynamic Women, by a jury of peers.  She and the other winners were honored at a celebration event on December 2nd at the Uptown Mint Museum. They will also be featured within the pages of US Airways magazine, December edition. The 20 women were selected because they are clearly leaders in their fields, made recognizable impacts toward improving the lives of others in the community, have fostered growth and advancement in the community, and have "lifted while climbing".

About the award, Dr. Nini stated, "I want to thank you all for the support and cooperation which you gave me unstintingly, whenever we worked on the many projects, big and small,  for the international city that we all love. I owe it all to you, my friends, and I am very grateful. The award belongs to you, too, for the work that we all do and I consider myself as just the "messenger" for the legions of caring people like you, who serve the community for the greater good."  Congratulations, Dr. Nini!
