Behind a Successful Event is a Strong Chairperson..
International House hosted one of the season's most anticipated events - the 22nd Annual Benefit Gala on the October 16, 2010 at Hilton Charlotte Center City. The festive and fun-filled evening celebrated Japan - Its Beauty and Culture and included both a Silent and Live Auction, Japanese singing, playing of Taiko drums, Japanese artifacts and crafts, plus dinner and dancing. International House gratefully acknowledges its sponsors for their support.
In addition to the generous support of our sponsors, the success of our annual gala also depends on the hard work, dedication, commitment and teamwork of the entire Gala Committee, and specifically the Chair of this year's committee, Josane Calvert.
Dynamic, fun-loving, sincere, tenacious, determined, committed - all these words aptly describe Josane Calvert. Josane has been the Chair and Co-chair of the Gala Committee a couple of times, and has been instrumental in planning and executing several Galas.
A first generation immigrant from France, Josane has been associated with International House for the past 22 years. She learned about International House through a friend and became a member of Doorways, our International Women's group. Josane has donned numerous hats at International House - that of a volunteer, staff member and now a Gala committee member. When asked about what has motivated her all these years, she said "My father came from France, and when he moved to the United States, he had a friend who helped him out. So, this is my way of paying it forward and the best way I could do it was through International House and what it does for the Charlotte community."
It is people like Josane who have been involved with International House over the years, making us what we are today. Their support, encouragement and dedication have helped us promote diversity and culture in our community and assist immigrants most in need of our services.
Josane, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the work that you have done and continue to do for International House. "We are so very grateful!" |

The Saturday Writers!

If I fall asleep with a pen in my hand, don't remove it - I might be writing in my dreams. ~Terri Guillemets
This is probably what went through the mind of each student at the creative writing class of Mr. Glenn Hutchinson at International House. The creative writing classes began a year ago at International House, and were held every Saturday.
Mr. Glenn Hutchinson, a professor at Johnson C Smith University conducted these classes. His mother was a tutor at International House too, and for years she taught students from different countries in her home on Saturdays.
These classes were not just classes, but were shared memories - memories of poetry, arepas, food, travel narratives etc between the students and their professor. Thank you Mr. Glenn, for making a difference and giving these writers such wonderful instruction, inspiration and motivation! |
