Today's Charlotte Woman magazine article features Anne Crotty, Immigration Attorney, International House

AnneFor over 50 years, beginning when she was in fifth grade, Anne Lafferty Crotty has been

helping international newcomers integrate into the community. She recalls one especially memorable attempt to welcome an immigrant into the United States.

"Yolanda Martino came to my school and didn't speak English," she says, remembering

the little girl's name, despite the passage of time. "My teacher sent me to the library to teach her, and I tried to be kind to her, in my little 10-year-old way." .....

Anne has led International House's Immigration Law Clinic since 2005, and each year helps over 250 low-income immigrants with their family reunification and naturalization needs. Anne is a member of the North Carolina Bar and has experience in legal services in Pennsylvania and private practice in North Carolina.

Kudos !

Douglas B. Thie, a student at UNC School of Law, has worked this summer in the Ginter Immigration Law Clinic.  Under the mentorship of Immigration Attorney Anne L. Crotty, Doug has assisted with cases involving permanent residency and citizenship.  He has researched legal issues, prepared motions for Immigration Court, and drafted petitions and applications for permanent residency and naturalization.

The internship has allowed Doug to gain exposure to his chosen field of practice.  "Anne has truly been a great teacher and mentor.  My work has been very rewarding and inspiring."  Doug's fluency in Spanish, experience in working with low-income clients and his superior writing and research skills have been invaluable to the Clinic.

His internship was made possible by the McMillan Fellowship program of the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation, awarded in honor of the late Judge James B. McMillan.  International House has won McMillan Fellowships for the past 4 years.

Youth English Tutoring Program

Since 1993, our English Tutoring Program (ETP) has helped over 800 students learn English at the most convenient time and place by pairing each of them with a caring, trained volunteer tutor. For the first time, we are offering a version of ETP for school-age children and teens.

Youth ETP assists students who are unable to attend traditional English-as-a-second-language classes due to various circumstances, including cost, transportation issues, location, and time constraints.

These free sessions for children 8-14 years old will take place for 4 weeks -- late July through late August. To learn more about the program, please contact Norma Jiron at 704-333-8099 or at

njiron@ihclt.org.

In mid-May, The Bank of America Charitable Foundation granted Charlotte's International House $5,000 through the Foundation's Local Grant program. International House plans to use the grant for the English programs that have helped hundreds of immigrants in Charlotte.

Bank of America has been an ongoing supporter of International House for several years including sponsoring the International House Annual Gala and having Bank executives serve on the International House Board.

The grant allows International House to serve more low-income immigrants by removing an additional barrier many of them face- the inability to speak English. International House believes this grant will improve lives and strengthen benefits for our community's economic and workforce development.

The grant will support the following programs - English Tutoring. English classes, English conversation hours and English writing classes. To learn more about the program, please visit us at www.ihclt.org
