Celebrating Citizenship

Demila

When Demila passed her citizenship test late last Fall, her first call was to International House.  The Bosnian immigrant was proud to become a US citizen, and grateful to our organization for helping her achieve this goal.  To celebrate and say "thank you," Demila shared her talent for cooking with staff and volunteers, bringing in a Bosnian feast of delicious homemade cheese pies and spinach pies. Demila first came to International House last Fall and was matched with a volunteer tutor.  She also attended English and citizenship classes.

"Demila is a very special lady.  She worked so hard to learn English, and two months after taking part in our English tutoring and classes, you could tell she lost her fear of speaking English.  We were all touched by Demila and her wonderful attitude," said Norma Jiron, English Tutoring Program manager.
