Teacher Externship Program

Andy Peterson, teacher
SE Valley Middle School
Summer Teacher Externship
Danfoss, Ames

Andy has been busy this summer in an environment of 'Just in Time Manufacturing' at the Danfoss plant in Ames.  One of his projects has been a time study of a line in the plant.  He commented on how seconds matter in this environment!  The experience has provided him with insight into the working environment that his students may be interested in pursuing.

As a teacher extern, Andy is learning and earning all at the same time!  He will walk away after his 6-week experience with a project for his classroom, an expanded professional network, first-hand experiences to share with his students, 1 graduate credit, and over $4,000!

Check out this video about the program!

Business & Schools!

The overarching goal of Iowa STEM's STEM BEST, Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) is to unite the expertise of public and private sectors to strengthen the continuum from school to careers. The heart of the STEM BEST model is the centrality of business or industry partner(s) in defining curriculum and work space. Topics and projects are driven by the needs of the business partner(s) in collaboration with educators. Learning spaces are separate and distinct from the standard school environment-ideally at the business site.
The STEM Council has designated a portion of the state legislative funding to support the establishment of six new Iowa STEM BEST models with the intention to fund one in each of the six STEM regions. Awarded applicants will become an Iowa STEM BEST model of the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council and receive $25,000 to be matched with local cost-share.

STEM Learning & Fun for Students

This was the third summer for Ellsworth Community College to host a STEM camp for students in grades 4 to 12.  Faculty members from the Math, Physics, Biology, Emergency Services, Continuing Education departments along with the Intermediary Network program provided hands on learning on the main campus in Iowa Falls.  Students attended from Hardin and Franklin counties as well as few from Minnesota!

Courses were offered included 911 Emergency, Bio Blitz, VEX Robotics, Jet Toy, Intro to Computer Modeling, Gravity Cruisers, and Tiny Critters.

Molly Hippen, Intermediary Network Coordinator, and Brent Ries, Mathematics Faculty member identified the keys to success as volunteers from across campus department including high school and college students and providing the student participants multiple choices of courses.  STEM program materials provided by Ellsworth Community College and the North Central STEM Hub's lending library.

Across the courses the main areas of emphasis where:  attention to detail, controlling variables, and the collection and review of data.

Information about the camp can be found online.

Have you hosted a summer STEM camp and want to share your story or want to learn more about the Hub's STEM lending library?  Contact Paul Gibbins, NC STEM Manger.
