Footnotes            December 2012/January 2013
Happy Holidays!  Whether we can believe it or not, Christmas and New Year's are just weeks away!  VDC will be closed from Wed., Dec. 19 through Tues., Jan. 1.  We wish all of you a wonderful holiday season and a very happy 2013!
Meet Ms. Ciera Cottrill
Many of you know Ciera as a VDC dancer, but did you know she is now part of the VDC staff? These days, in addition to being a VDC dancer, you will also find Ciera assisting parents, dancers and teachers from behind the front desk.

Dance has been a part of Ciera's life since she was 3 years old. And, believe it or not, she has been dancing at VDC since she was 4 and Ms. Regan was her first teacher here!  For those of you who know her, this probably doesn't come as a surprise, but Ciera's favorite style of dance is tap!

Ciera's fondest memory of dance was being a young dancer in Ms. Leigh-Anne's Theater Dance class. During the different holidays the class would dance to songs like "Monster Mash" and "Santa Baby".

In Ciera's extra time she enjoys doing craft projects. She likes to draw, write and crochet blankets for the family. You will also find Ciera listening to a very wide range of music from Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Doors and the Beatles. Oh yes, also throw in the occasional country.

Next time you are in for dance classes, stop by the front desk and say hello. She is happy to help you with any questions you might have!
Meet Ms. Jeny Cope
Ms. Jeny started dancing at the age of 4 at Showcase Dance Studio and has been dancing ever since. Looking back, her favorite dance memory was when she was dancing in college at Tennessee and they would start every football game by running through a huge "T" made by the band as fireworks would be going off to start the game.
Jeny's favorite style of dance is Hip Hop which is a good thing since that is what she teaches here at VDC! The music of her choice is "a little bit of everything."  She says "I judge music by whether I can dance to it".
Jeny has a passion for dogs and volunteers with the humane society in finding homes for shelter dogs. She also participates every year in the runway show, "Fashion for Paws," that helps raise money for homeless animals.
We would like to welcome Jeny to VDC and we are excited to have her sharing her love of dance with our Hip Hop dancers on Fridays.
Excel in Motion
Some of VDC's dancers attended the Excel in Motion dance convention in Reston, VA the weekend of November 17 and 18. Our dancers took classes in Hip Hop, Jazz, Lyrical and Contemporary from some amazing teachers who many of you know from the television show, So You Think You Can Dance.  The teachers included tWitch, Lauren Froderman, Joshua Allen, Allison Holker, Alex Wong and more!  We had a great time and it was a wonderful opportunity for our dancers!

Please Watch for Children

Our parking lot is a busy place with lots of cars coming and going and lots of children walking to and from the building. Please slow down and keep the safety of our dancers and their families in mind as you drive in and out of the parking lot.  Thank you!

When an older student mentors a younger one, both can blossom.
By Diane Gudat

I was 12 years old and standing backstage at my first recital. My knees were knocking and the feathers on my white Swan Lakecostume were giving me hives. And then I saw them-the high school advanced jazz class. I had never seen anything so spectacular!
