President's Message
Lucretia Piercy, President

March 2014

Happy March everyone! It is Woman of the Year time again!   She will be "crowned" at our March 13 meeting. Don't miss the excitement!

Although our February meeting was cancelled due to snow, Sky-Hy has been very busy this month.

The board met two times in February to work on planning for our 2nd Annual Table Top Stroll with Champagne and Chocolate. To be held Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza Resort. The time will be 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Admission tickets will be $25.00 and vendor/exhibitor tables will be $50.00 each. Presently we have registrations for ten exhibitor tables, our maximum is thirty. Corporate sponsorships last year were $1,500.00, our goal this year is $3,000.00. I am asking the ENTIRE membership to seek corporate sponsors in any amount. A sponsorship letter was emailed to the membership to assist you in seeking this money. Persons donating in this way will be a part of college/continuing education scholarships for worthy women in our area. They will also receive recognition in our advertising materials.

Check out our advertisement in March with WNC Woman magazine and April with Sophie magazine.

On Saturday, April 5, 2014 from 7:00 a.m. - 10 a.m. we will have a Flapjack Breakfast Fundraiser. Tickets are $7.00 each and are available now. Your breakfast includes: pancakes, butter, syrup, sausage, orange juice, and coffee. This will be held at Applebee's, 1655 Hendersonville Road. Proceeds from this fundraiser are for District 4 VP campaign funds.

I will be joining the Cavalier chapter in Richmond, VA on March 8, 2014 for a "Hattitude" luncheon. This luncheon is a hat party and I am looking forward to wearing my beautiful fuchsia and black hat. All four candidates running for District 4 VP will be present at this luncheon. I look forward to sharing the luncheon highlights at our March 13 regular chapter meeting.

District 4 spring conference is just around the corner. The dates are April 24-26 in Roanoke, Virginia. Thus far five of us are attending. Let's make it a few more, there is plenty of room. Conference registration is $285.00. We will share hotel rooms, car pool and split the cost. Sharing in the expenses makes attending conference affordable. There will be educational seminars, plenty of networking, and girl time with lots of fun. Come to conference and see what makes ABWA great.

Your image speaks volumes, but what does it say? Consciously or not, people make value judgments based on your appearance, clothing and posture. While you don't have a choice about that, you do have a choice about the impression you choose to make. Image and wardrobe consultant Leslie Willmott will help you understand how to adjust your level of visual presence with the strategic use of color, style, line and body language.

The Flapjack Fundraiser breakfast includes pancakes, syrup, butter, scrambled eggs, bacon, orange juice, and coffee. We will sell the tickets for $7.00 per person...a reasonable price for a full breakfast. Applebee's will do all the cooking! What I will need is 10- 12 volunteers, they include 2 Greeters, 2 Seaters, 3 Pancake Servers, 2 Beverage Servers, and 2 Bussers...all volunteers must be at least 16 years old. We would really like all members to be a part of this fundraiser so let me know what you would like to volunteer for so we can get things going. These tickets are an easy sell, who doesn't like a pancake breakfast! Start letting your co-workers, friends, family, church or synagogue members, or anyone else you come in contact with that our SkyHy Chapter of ABWA will soon be selling tickets to this event and to get their tickets reserved now. If you would like more info on the Flapjack Fundraiser click on the link here Flapjack Fundraiser Applebee's Restaurants Dining and Bar Asheville NC This is what ABWA  is all about...fundraising to provide scholarships to young women in need. Also this year is especially important for fundraising as we have our very own President Lucretia that has been nominated for District IV Vice President and we need to support her during her campaign.
Please get back to me as soon as possible.

Inspirations from Andrea Bishop!

This month I have some suggestions for small changes you can make with your work life. My hope is to inspire you with simple ideas that you will be more likely to maintain.

At work, small changes could look like making a to-do list at the end of the day for the next day's work. This frees your brain to work, when you have captured all of the details you're expending energy holding onto. It also allows your brain to work on your goals overnight while you sleep and helps you manifest creative solutions.

Here's more:

- Determine your top 3 "to do's" for the day and of course be sure to do them.

- Close your door to minimize interruptions.

- Designate 3 times during a work day that you'll check email, to streamline your time.

- Block-schedule your work activities.

- File for 5 minutes a day.

- Clean off your desk at the end of the day.

- Delegate something.

- Each day do one thing you've been putting off.

I hope these small changes help you in big ways!

Next month I'll have simple ideas to help improve your health.

Until then,

Andrea

Kathleen here. Look at Aaron and Addyson now at just over 3 months old. Even cuter! How is that possible?!!

Volunteers Needed
VETCARD Program

Mr. Elliott sent this information to the ABWA SKYHY Chapter email address. Here is a summary of his program. Detailed information will be distributed at the meeting.

The P.S. on the initial letter is what caught me. See below.

PROGRAM: VETCARD CAMPAIGN

FOUNDED: NOVEMBER 2013, BUNCOMBE COUNTY

FOUNDER: JOE ELLIOTT

Many of our oldest veterans are now in care facilities or homebound, therefore many have very limited contact with outside world. Many suffer with chronic disability, illness, some are lonely or depressed.

The cards are a small but powerful way of letting these men and women know they are remembered and appreciated for the services they rendered our nation.

  • Major Objective: To see that as many older veterans (with focus on WW2 & Korean era) in North Carolina receive a card of appreciation and support.
  • How To: Participants can either make their own cards or use store purchased ones. The most important thing is that they take the time to let a vet know he/she is remembered and appreciated

  • Fees: None

"P.S. I'm looking for an individual or group willing to provide cards of encouragement to ten (former) female veterans, now living in a community house in Asheville. I am told that women veterans typically receive less attention than their male counterparts, thus as added urgency here."

I contacted Mr. Elliott immediately and said that I would definitely be writing cards for all the veterans and I would ask the organizations that I am a member of to participate also.

Isn't ABWA about women helping women?

My request to my SKY HY CHAPTER Sisters is for each of you to bring a Cheery Hello card (address Dear Veteran), each month to the meeting. I will make sure they are delivered to the VETCARD Program.

Thank you for volunteering with me.

Randye Unsell

VETCARD PROGRAM
WOMEN AIRFORCE SERVICE PATROL

The WASP (Women Airforce Service Patrol) provided invaluable non-combat support services to the US war effort during WW2 -- not to mention opening doors of opportunity for generations of women who followed.

Among other duties, they assisted in flying new American made bombers and other types of aircraft to points all over the globe where they were needed.  In addition, some of the female pilots tested rocket-propelled planes, jet-propelled planes and worked with radar-controlled targets. Between September 1942 and December 1944, the WASP delivered 12,650 aircraft of 78 different types. All in all, it is estimated they flew a total of more than 60 million miles in every type of military aircraft.

Although long overdue, the WASP were finally granted veteran status in 1977, and in 2009 awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, among the highest service awards any American can receive. Truly, they were trailblazers and heroes, helping inspire younger women to believe in their dreams.

Out of the nearly 2000 original members, only around 180 WASP veterans remain today.  SEND A CARD TODAY TO ONE OF THESE GREAT WOMEN, LETTING HER KNOW SHE IS APPRECIATED FOR THE EFFORTS SHE MADE ON BEHALF OF OUR NATION AND WOMEN EVERYWHERE.
