May Days
*
May 1st - May Day
May 5th - Cinco de Mayo
On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. This single military battle signified defeat of a European colonial power and a victory for the Mexican people. This single battle was the roots of Cinco de Mayo.
.
Today, this holiday is celebrated by Mexicans, and especially the Hispanic community in the U.S. It is a time of song, dance, partying, and in general a time to be proud to be of Hispanic descent.
*
May 8th - VE Day
Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day) commemorates the end of fighting in Europe during World War II. Did you Know? The original planned date for the celebration of V-E Day, was May 9th, 1945. But, journalists caught wind of the plans. So, the U.S. and Brittain moved the date up by a day to May 8th.
*
2nd Sunday in May - Mother's Day
Everybody has a mother and absolutely no one is more special than mom. Did you know?
The first Mother's Day was May 10, 1908 in Philadelphia.
*
Last Monday in May - Memorial Day
Memorial Day is dedicated to service men and women who gave their lives for freedom and country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have passed away. The roots of Memorial Day go back to 1865 and the end of the Civil War.

President's Message:
Wow, had a fantastic April 4 fundraiser! The exhibitor tables "sold out"!!! Corporate sponsorships reached $1,450.00! We had a large ad in the March and April issue of WNC Woman Magazine and had two publications in "The Scene" with the 2nd one on March 22.
We sold tickets like crazy, 96 to be exact!
In the spirit of fun and competition, we had a contest for the member that sells the most tickets. The winner will receive a free meal/meeting fee at the next ABWA monthly meeting ($25.00 value). If you sold 10 or more tickets you will receive BOTH a free meal/meeting fee at the next monthly meeting plus free local dues upon your renewal date ($50.00 value) plus a certificate of appreciation. We got that competitive spirit raging, and the winner is Randye Unsell.
Officer elections for the upcoming year/term will be held at our June 13 meeting. Please consider what job you are interested in and volunteer.

ABWA SKY-HY CHAPTER
BOARD MEETING MINUTES
April 17, 2013
The Board meeting was held at Michelle Marshall's residence, and started at 6:00 p.m.
Attending: Lucretia Piercy, Randye Unsell, Kimberly McAfoos, Michelle Marshall, Priscilla Lloyd, Karen King-Smith, and Margie Pressley.
Lucretia informed us that our Champagne and Chocolate fundraiser had netted a profit of $3,058.77, making our effort a HUGE success!
It was decided that we will definitely do this event again next spring. Discussion continued with an exchange of ideas on how to make the event even better! One of the ideas was that the 6-9pm was too long. At 8pm, most of the guests had already departed. Also, we discussed moving the music to a location near the food table. The music could hardly be heard as one of our vendors was nearby and they could not engage in conversation with loud music. Moving the band should eliminate future problems. Also, there was not enough food on hand. Additionally, we will move all the chocolate to the food table next year. We also discussed other issues concerning Crowne Plaza and the way they handled certain issues. These issues will be resolved to make for a more smooth event next year.
Michelle gave a treasurer's report, stating that we had $3,528.61 in the general treasury, and $470.78 in the scholarship fund.
Margie gave a report on the state of our scholarship applications. We have received six applications and there will be a meeting of the committee to select a recipient. We will give $1,000 to the recipient. $500 in August and $500 in January 2014.
Lucretia mentioned that it was time to form a nominating committee for next year's officers and committee chairs. Michelle and Karen agreed to facilitate the committee again this year.
Randye reported that we have 172 guests on our Constant Contact list.
The Woman of the Year luncheon will be held on May 18th at 12:30pm at Posana Café (the former Café on the Square). Attendees will order from the menu. The chapter will pay for Michelle's lunch.
Lucretia reported that our membership is down to 26 members (21 members local). We must have 30 members to receive our Best Practices award.
The next board meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 21st, 6:00pm at Michelle Marshall's house. June's board meeting will be held on June 19th.
Additionally, we will need to have a meeting in July this year, instead of a picnic, as part of our commitment to achieve Best Practices. We will need an educational program speaker.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:53 p.m.
Respectfully submitted:
Kimberly Raphael McAfoos,
Recording Secretary
