"The word 'March' comes from the Roman 'Martius'. This was originally the first month of the Roman calendar and was named after Mars, the god of war. The Anglo-Saxons called the month Hlyd monath which means Stormy month, or Hraed monath which means Rugged month. All through Lent the traditional games played are marbles and skipping. The games were stopped on the stroke of twelve noon on Good Friday, which in some places was called Marble Day or Long Rope Day.  The game of marbles has been played for hundreds of years and some historians say that it might have been started by rolling eggs. In the past, round stones, hazelnuts, round balls of baked clay and even cherry stones have been used."

President's Message:

Wow, we are busy preparing for our April 4 fundraiser, and it is almost here.  The exhibitor tables are "sold out"!!!  Corporate sponsorships have reached $1,200.00!  We are off to a fantastic start.  We have a large ad in the March and April issue of WNC Woman Magazine and have had one publication in "The Scene" with our next one due on March 22.

Now what we all must do is sell tickets like crazy.  Booklets of five tickets were mailed to all members last week.  Contact me for an additional ticket supply.  Send an email blast about the fundraiser to all your contacts, colleagues, friends, and family.  It is vital that we have a good attendance.

In the spirit of fun and competition, we will have a contest for the member that sells the most tickets.  The winner will receive a free meal/meeting fee at the next ABWA monthly meeting ($25.00 value).  If you sell 10 or more tickets you will receive BOTH a free meal/meeting fee at the next monthly meeting plus free local dues upon your renewal date ($50.00 value) plus a certificate of appreciation.  Let's get that competitive spirit raging.  Go Sky-Hy!

Special thanks to Brenda Irvin for the design, printing, and production of our tickets, and posters.

"Together We Can, Together We Will" make this our best fundraiser ever!!!

Lucretia Piercy, President

ABWA SKY-HY CHAPTER
BOARD MEETING MINUTES
 February 19 , 2013

The board meeting was called to order by Lucretia at 6:10 p.m.  Present were: Lucretia Piercy, Michelle Marshall, Priscilla Lloyd, Pamela Pistor, Randye Unsell, and Brenda Irvin.

Plans were discussed about our April 4 fundraiser "Table Top Stroll with Champagne & Chocolate".  Funds have been received for the payment of eleven vendor tables.  Four additional tables are free due to bartering for advertising, music, and champagne.  The room under contract at the Crowne Plaza will hold fifteen tables, which means we are sold out in vendor table sales.  Lucretia will start a waiting list for additional persons requesting a table; if enough interest is expressed we will get a bigger room at the hotel.

Funds collected to date are $1,300.00.  Corporate sponsors are:  Benefit Solutions Inc., PlumbSmart Technologies LLC., Emory Electric Inc., WNC Woman Magazine, and Doug Keen.  We are waiting for funds promised from Sam's Club and David McAfoos.

The design and wording on the tickets was discussed and settled on.  Brenda Irvin will print and mail a booklet of five tickets to all members with a letter from Lucretia.

We will have five themed raffle baskets at this event.  They are:  chocolate, spring/garden, movie, Mother's Day, and outdoor baskets.  Pamela Pistor will contact the members for donations with three members to a basket to share in the cost.

Appetizers were discussed that will be provided by the hotel plus the need for vendors to provide candy or something on their table to give away.

A meeting is planned Monday, February 23 at 5:30 p.m. for the selection and judging of our new WOY.  She will be "crowned" at our March 14 meeting.

Michelle reported that our general fund has a balance of $1,582.00; the scholarship fund balance is $520.78.

Next board meeting will be held Wednesday, March 20, 6 p.m. at Michelle's home.

Meeting adjourned 8:15 p.m.

ABWA FEBRUARY MEETING MINUTES

Lucretia Piercy called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m., at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and we recited the Pledge of Allegiance.  Introductions were made.

Lucretia installed our newest member - Toni Poppy.

Our program speaker, Cheri Britton gave a dynamic speech on "How to Have a Smaller 'But'".  She gave us tips on how to get off the couch and begin making real changes. Stop letting the "buts" rule your life!

Pam thanked Cheri for coming to speak to the chapter and DONATING her time for us.  Pam also mentioned the upcoming "Frenzied Female" event on February 21st on the property of Parkridge Hospital, in the Leah Patterson Building.  Tickets cost $45/per person.

Lucretia thanked Brenda for printing our Champagne & Chocolate flyers and updated the chapter on our event.  Admission will be $25 per person.  The event is Thursday evening, April 9th and will be held at the Crowne Plaza.  We will have half a ballroom for this event, so the space will be good for a crowd!!  We have 7 sponsors at this date.

Sue Stewart was our Vocational Speaker and told us about her "Friendly Dog Leash" business, as well as her other endeavors.

Lucretia called for a vote on the Secretary's report, which was presented on each table for review.  Sue motioned to accept.  Randye U. seconded.  The motion passed.  Lucretia then called for a motion to accept the Treasurer's report, previously emailed.  Sue motioned to accept, and Joy seconded.  The motion passed.

Lucretia reminded the chapter that the deadline to submit a Woman of the Year application is February 20th.  The application will be based on a point system again, and applications should be sent to Lucretia.  An announcement of the new Woman of the Year will be made in March.

Randye U. asked about whether Tickets for our Champagne and Chocolate event are ready.  Brenda informed us that she would have them available soon.

Lucretia announced that the next Board meeting will be on February 20th at Michelle's house - 6pm.

We were asked to fill out the surveys on the tables.  Both regarding Cheri Britton's presentation and any other comments or suggestions members might have to improve our meetings.

Pot of Gold and Door Prizes were drawn, and the secret pal gifts were distributed.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:10pm.

Respectfully Submitted:

Kimberly Raphael McAfoos,

Recording Secretary
