Greetings!
November is Thanksgiving month, although the observance of Thanksgiving Day doesn't fall this year until November 28th. Actually every day and every month should be filled with Thanksgiving for those of us who live in paradise. We are recipients of one of the most beautiful, abundant, and diverse counties in the State of California. We are small enough to work together to improve the lot of all of our residents. Yet, we are large enough to provide all the resources we need to accomplish anything we want. If we work together in the midst of the richness of our differences, we shall turn our challenges into successes.
We at the Food Bank are particularly grateful for being at the center of a county working together. From donors of time or money (that the Food Bank can leverage ten times over), and the self-giving of over a thousand volunteers, we make nutritious food available and accessible to thousands who would otherwise go without. Working together makes it happen. Working together is the heart of Thanksgiving. You can't be grateful and not want to help. I suppose that's why the word says it all: Thanks-Giving. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving this year!

Apple Tasting
The Food Bank's Nutrition Outreach Manager, Natalie Lovgren, recently visited the Oak Park YMCA in Paso Robles. There she led an apple tasting activity using five varieties of locally grown apples harvested through our GleanSLO program. The children ranging from age 5 to 11 tasted the apples, gave their opinions, voted on their favorites, and learned about the basic nutritional properties of apples. It was the first of hopefully many interactive sessions with young youth that the Food Bank has planned throughout the county that will work to promote interest in healthy locally-grown fruit.
