Happy Holidays!

All of us at BBVA wish you a safe and happy holiday season. Please keep in mind that the holidays can hold some hidden hazards for pets. We thought this graphic produced by the American Veterinary Medical Association did a great job getting the point across!

What is Your Pet's New Year's Resolution?

New Year's Resolutions don't just have to be for the people in the family. Pets can have New Year's Resolutions too. Here are some suggestions from the veterinarian about how you can help your pet resolve to be healthier and happier.

Help me quit that table scrap habit.
I'm not actually hungry when I beg for scraps, so don't give in to me. It's for my own good. All of those scraps lead to weight gain, which can lead to health problems including diabetes and arthritis. The rich and spicy scraps can cause an upset tummy or even a more serious condition called pancreatitis. You can help me to stop begging by moving me to another room or putting me in my crate so I know that I will not be getting anything from your plate.

Help me prevent parasites all of the time.

It may be winter, but fleas and ticks can still bother me. If it warms up above freezing, they can bite me in no time. And you know how I love to track down wild animal poop and even take a lick of a frozen poopsicle full of parasite eggs. Please keep me healthy by remembering my monthly heartworm, intestinal parasite, flea and tick preventative.

Help me have a healthier mouth.
You brush you teeth every day. So should I. But I need your help. Read the September 2011 article on brushing teeth in our newsletter archive to learn how.

Let's get more exercise together.
An extra walk every day will help both of us feel better and lose that extra pound. Even indoors, getting out those toys and playing a game will be stress relieving and fun for us both. Let's aim for adding 20 minutes of active play, walking or bonding every day. This will benefit both your health and mine.

Here's to a great 2013!

Will You Help Us Give Back to the Community?

Three opportunities to give this holiday season!

1.  We are accepting food donations to help benefit a local charity called "For the Love of Pets".  This non-profit food pantry and boutique is staffed by dedicated volunteers who work in the pantry and boutique, pick up donated items, and aid pet owners in the care and well being of their animals.  You can purchase a can or bag of food from our office or drop off a food donation of your own.

2. Be a Santa Paws!  Economic troubles have made it difficult for many families to care for their pets.  Buzzards Bay Veterinary Associates' staff has created a fund to help make it possible for sick pets to get the care they need.  If you would like to make a donation to our fund, please visit the office.  Every little bit helps!

3. A dedicated team from Buzzards Bay Veterinary Associates, family and friends will once again Polar Dive at the Onset Pier on January 1, 2013 at noon.  This will be our 4th year of participation to support the Onset Box 5 Association, run by the Onset Fire Department to raise money for various different community needs.  If you would like to donate to the cause, please stop by our office to make your donation.  We also appreciate cheerleaders on the day of the event!  Come watch us take the plunge!

All donations, no matter how big or small, are gratefully accepted!
