CONGRATULATIONS TO OLIVIA DE LA TORRE

US YOUTH SOCCER - PLAYER OF THE MONTH!

Olivia has been playing soccer for nine years, and often plays as a defender who is happiest when preventing a goal rather than scoring one. She recently earned the sportsmanship award at a tournament, and she makes sure each of her teammates enjoys the game.

Off the field, Olivia volunteers often as a member of the National Junior Honor Society, as well as with her church nursery each weekend and with the Reading Buddies program at her school. She also recently volunteered at the 2015 US Youth Soccer ODP Championships as field monitor. After moving to Arizona from California,

Olivia handled the adjustment well and has balanced playing with her new soccer club with achieving honor roll grades in school. She is an example of a well-rounded student-athlete who works hard on and off the field.

DOC TALK WITH BANNER CONCUSSION CENTER
Importance of Proper Nutrition

As the calendar turns to May, it is time to start thinking about the summer months and how to best prepare our athletes for the heat by looking at what they eat and drink. This month, we are happy to have our dietician friends from Banner Cardon Children's Medical Center help to provide some nutritional advice.

Good nutrition is important for everyone but especially when exercising.   If your child is active in sports, adequate nutrition before, during, and after exercise will promote a positive exercise experience...

"HOW TO DEVELOP REFEREES"
By: Randy Vogt

When teaching a person how to play golf, if you put the ball on the tee 300 yards from the hole and ask the newbie to swing, most likely he or she would become frustrated very quickly. Instead, you place the ball a yard from the hole. Once the new golfer can consistently putt the ball in the hole, confidence will grow and you move the ball farther away. Eventually, the ball will wind up on the tee, 300 yards from the hole.

Same deal with referees who have just become certified as you give them the most basic assignment with support to start out. So their first game should be as an AR with an experienced ref in the middle to give pointers.

Size Doesn't Matter in Soccer, "I have a dream..."

Think of all the small soccer players who are immensely successful. Lionel Messi's height rivals some of the shortest soccer players in world soccer today. Or would the 'Hand of God' ever have happened if Diego Maradona had been passed over? What would world class soccer be like if a coach had dismissed Messi  or Maradona because of physicality?

"I have a dream..." Yes I've ripped off those immortal words (from Martin Luther King, Jr. I Have a Dream speech delivered 28 August 1963,) but I'm going to continue...

"I have a dream that the small players in U.S. Soccer will become the big players...
