Dr. Castro, please tell us, is sleep important in the recovery process after exercise?

What is TOPSoccer?

TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community based program that is designed to meet the needs of children and young adults that have physical and/or intellectual disabilities. The program is geared towards player development rather than to competition .The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to anyone aged 5 and older, who has a mental or physical disability.
The basis of TOPSoccer is a modified version of the game of soccer, specifically altered to allow full participation and enjoyment for each athlete.

What are the program's benefits?
1. Development of motor skills and improved physical fitness.
2. Promotes social skills by teaching teamwork and cooperation
3. Provides safe participation and fair play.
4. Develops positive self-concepts through experiences in discipline, initiative and achievement, which encourage children to fully realize their potential.
5. To have FUN!

Who is eligible for TOPSoccer?
Any player aged 5 and older having a physical or mental disability that limits their ability to perform at the level of play they have chosen to participate. Emphasis of this program is on development, training, and providing meaningful participation rather than on competition.

FINDING THE RIGHT BALANCE...

QUESTION

I was wondering if you have done a story in the past or possibly consider a future story regarding the clash between Club Soccer and High School Soccer. What do the experts say about practicing twice a day? Once at high school and then at club practice? My daughter plays on a team heading to National League in 3 weeks, we asked our high school coach to let our daughter sustain from high school practice (contact drills) until she returns from North Carolina.

ANSWER:

Coaches of elite players absolutely must educate the player and the player's parents on striking the right balance of activity. It is also very helpful when that player's coaches are all involved in the discussion. Connecting those coaches is the responsibility of the player. We are mistaken when we think that a teenaged player has boundless energy and therefore can play in multiple demanding soccer events. No athlete has inexhaustible energy. All athletes need recovery time from strenuous events (matches, tournaments or demanding training sessions).

UNHAPPY WITH YOUR COACH?  HOW TO RESPOND:

By Pete Huryk

Invariably as I talk to players, there are usually complaints surrounding coaches. I'm sure that the players believe the gripes are legitimate. This is a perfect opportunity to use your focus and circumvent things you can't control.

First of all, think of the things that you really want in a coach. Think of the attributes in your ideal coach, not the outcomes.

Do you want a coach who gives you playing time regardless of your skill or attitude? Do you want a coach who gives out equal playing time? Do you want a coach who blasts you for mistakes or talks to you calmly about issues?
