2ND ANNUAL MCDONALD'S "SOCCER SATURDAY" A MAJOR SUCCESS:

On Saturday, March 2nd central and Northern Arizona McDonald's locations partnered with AYSA to promote, "Soccer Saturday"!

Over 30 AYSA member clubs participated and adopted over 80 McDonald's locations during the hours of 11am to 1pm. As a result, a portion of counter sales will be presented back to each club to be used toward offsetting regitration fees for next season for those in need.

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR ALL USSF "D" LICENSE CANDIDATES:

Arizona Youth Soccer Association is excited about the new direction the United States Soccer Federation is heading with the USSF "D" License. We are working hard in conjunction with them to implement these changes as well as curriculum updates to improve the overall level of coaching in the state of Arizona.  These changes will only benefit the overall development of our players and teams in the long run.

Effective as of January 1, 2013 candidates and hosting clubs will need to be aware of the following requirements and changes:

a. Waivers will no longer be granted to any coaches - all coaches must attend and pass the USSF "E" License.

b. The course will no longer be held on consecutive weekends.  There will now be at least 60 days between the first and second weekends to help accommodate deliberate practices.

If you have any questions, please contact Austin Daniels

AYSA CLUB NEWS:

SCOTTSDALE BLACKHAWKS COLLEGE ADVISORY PROGRAM

The Scottsdale Soccer Blackhawks have reinvented the true meaning of a College Advisory Program by implementing a program to educate their membership on college soccer and the overall college search process. The accessibility and personal attention of the program Director and the inclusions of the program itself are unprecedented not only for Arizona soccer, but for youth soccer as a whole. The Scottsdale Soccer Blackhawks College Advisory Program has reached out and provided beneficial information and opportunities to all age groups, boys and girls, 6th grade and above.

With the ever increasing costs of a college education, the competitiveness of college admissions, and the high dollar outlays required to participate in alternative youth travel soccer leagues, it was important that the Scottsdale Soccer Blackhawks College Advisory Program be accessible to all players, whether they choose to play college soccer or not. The focus of the program addresses the athletic, financial and academic components of the college process.

In August of 2012, Katie Cole was brought on as the Director of the College Advisory Program to implement and focus on this area for the Scottsdale Soccer Blackhawks Program exclusively. Katie brings a wealth of knowledge and networking connections as a former Youth Club Soccer State Champion and Regional Finalist, NCAA Division I 4-Year Starter, College Coach, Club Director of Coaching and current Arizona and Region IV ODP Staff.

While Scottsdale Soccer's comprehensive College Advisory Program has been established to assist all players and their families with the various aspects of the college athletics recruiting process, player and parent education remains the most important piece. The program includes such areas as PSAT, SAT, and ACT test preparation, admissions and application information, financial aid information, community service programs, college scouting and ID opportunities, and much more. For more information on this or other Scottsdale Soccer programs, please visit our website at: www.scottsdalesoccer.com.

SunSafe Soccer

Sun Safe Soccer for Arizona Youth Soccer:

We have a skin cancer epidemic in America - one in five Americans will suffer from skin cancer in their lifetime. While soccer contributes to healthy lives, soccer-related sun exposure early in life can cause skin cancer in adulthood. The good news is that by following a few simple daily habits, most skin cancers can be prevented!

The Sun Safe Soccer Program is working to build awareness and spread a skin cancer prevention message. We in the soccer community have the opportunity to build a healthier future, save lives and make soccer the most Sun Safe sport nationwide by teaching the Sun Safe Soccer steps. Imagine that your club is not only recognized as a great competitor but also as a leading contributor to healthy lifestyles in your area.

It's easy to remember the Sun Safe Soccer steps!

  • Before the game: Safety first - Sunscreen, then shinguards
  • After the game: Cool down. Cool off. Cover up.

What it all means: In order to be effective, sunscreen must be applied 15 minutes before vigorous activities. That's why sunscreen goes on before shinguards! And that sunscreen is the best on-field defense players have against the harmful effects of the sun's rays.

When the game is over, players should cool down and cool off in the shade, avoiding sun exposure when possible. Clubs are encouraged to put tents over bench areas and move half-time breaks and post-game talks to a shady area whenever possible. When players then cover up by wearing sun-protective clothing such as long sleeves and hats, they not only protect their skin from the sun but they help to keep their bodies cool!

Best of all, these simple steps can help coaches and parents protect themselves from skin cancer too!

Visit our website at www.asds.net/Sun-Safe-Soccer to learn more and sign up a team or club to be part of the Sun Safe Soccer movement!
