LIBERTY MUTUAL INSURANCE "RESPONSIBLE SPORTS" AWARD TO
CDO '97 GIRLS GOLD:
At the Region IV President's Cup this past summer in Aurora, Colorado the CDO '97 Girls Gold team (Representing Arizona) were at the soccer complex awaiting their second group game against a team from Alaska. Word came that the team from Alaska was stuck in traffic behind a serious road accident close to the complex.
The rules of the competition state that if a team is not at the field 15 minutes after the scheduled kick off time, that the game is automatically forfeited. However, as a gesture of sportsmanship, the CDO 97G Gold coach, Bill Bock approached the tournament committee and asked them to waive this rule, even though accepting a forfeit would have guaranteed the team safe passage into the knockout phase of the tournament.
After speaking with his players, they all agreed and understood that for the Alaska team to travel 2,500 miles for the competition to not play one of their games would have been something that went against the spirit of the competition, and that the game should be played.
This resulted in the game kicking off very late. By the time the match began, the CDO players had already been at the field for almost three hours, and the game resulted in a 1-1 draw. Ironically, the following day saw CDO draw 1-1 again, and they were eliminated on goal differential from the competition.... by Alaska.
Whereas accepting the forfeit would have been the easy thing to do, playing the game and respecting the competition was the RIGHT thing to do. As a result, the CDO '97 Girls Gold team earned a place in the 2012 "Top 10 Responsible Sports Moments" by Liberty Mutual Insurance and their "Responsible Sports program!
Arizona Youth Soccer Association is extremely proud of this team for many reasons. Representing our state at a Regional competition is an honor, but to do so in a manner that exudes class as the CDO '97 Girls Gold team goes above and beyond. AYSA appreciates of all members of this team, including players, coaches and parents for doing the right thing with class!

HELP AYSA SUPPORT,
"COACHES UNITED AGAINST CANCER"
Childhood Cancer strikes 175,000 youth per year - worldwide... The costs of treatment and research are ever increasing.
In an effort to provide much needed funding toward childhood cancer research, the St. Baldricks Foundation was born. Founded in 2000, the southern California based foundation strives to work with communities and organizations across the United States to raise money in a very unique way... by having heads SHAVED!
Over 240,000 people, including over 24,000 women have had their heads shaved in less than 12 years to raise money for childhood cancer!
Arizona Youth Soccer Association would like to assist St. Baldricks and their efforts. On March 5, 2013, AYSA is sponsoring an event called, "Coaches United Against Cancer". Organized as a "Club Challenge" the goal is to have at least one coach per club raise money for having his/her head shaved while on public display!
Most AYSA clubs have been notified of this event. AYSA would like to encourage all players and their families to contact your club to offer assistance in fundraising efforts. If your club is unaware of this event, please contact AYSA Technical Director- Austin Daniels by email. The goal is to have a significant coach from each club drive home that night with a shiny head!
"Coaches United Against Cancer" will take place in Tempe at the Sports Authority location at Arizona Mills Mall. In addition to head shavings, the event will feature a silent auction and many other fun activities for the entire family.
The financial goal of "Coaches United Against Cancer" is to raise $5,000.00; however we would like to greatly surpass that goal. Thus, if you or your company is interested to have your head shaved, or would like to participate through one of the many ancillary fundraising methods, please contact Ron Gilmore, Director of Marketing & Communications for AYSA by email.
"Coaches United Against Cancer" is a fantastic way for the Arizona soccer community to demonstrate to the rest of our state that we can organize ourselves and step-up to support children in need and we are counting on your participation!
For more information on the St. Baldricks Foundation, please visit their website
Clubs, please click here to register. Once your designated coach for head shaving has registered, the fundraising can begin.
AYSA would like to acknowledge the following companies for their support of this event:

ARIZONA NATIVE LUIS ROBLES TRAINS WITH
ARIZONA ODP GOALKEEPERS
Recently, several Arizona ODP Goalkeepers were visited by Arizona native and current New York Red Bulls Goalkeeper Luis Robles! Robles, who grew up in Sierra Vista, Arizona played for Tucson Soccer Academy and the Arizona Olympic Development Program (ODP). (Luis is pictured in the photo above in the center. He is surrounded by AYSA Technical Director Austin Daniels (L) and one of the Arizona ODP GK Instructors Brian Periman.)
The timing was perfect to provide instruction as all ODP teams concluded their final training sessions at the Grande Sports World in Casa Grande, Arizona prior to departing for Las Vegas on January 10th for the Region IV Far West ODP Championships.
Following his collegiate time at the University of Portland, Robles moved-on to pursue his professional career in Germany. In 2007, he signed with Kaiserslautern and later moved on to sign with Karlsruher SC. In 2009, Luis was on the US Men's National Team roster and participated in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
In August of 2012, Robles returned to the United States and signed with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer.
AYSA would like to thank Luis Robles for taking the time to visit and train with the Goalkeepers from our Olympic Development Program and we wish him continued success for the remainder of his career!
