The Orleans Parish School Board held its regular monthly Board Business Meeting on January 19, 2016, in the Auditorium of the new McDonogh 35 High School, 4000 Cadillac Street. A Public Hearing on Policy Matters was held prior to the Business Meeting. Also, prior to both events, newly elected Board Member John A. Brown, Sr., was sworn in during a short ceremony.

REPORT FROM JANUARY 19 OPSB MEETINGS

Public Hearing

Revised OPSB Policy Section I, Instruction

No one appeared to speak on any of the policies
Recoded and updated to align with state and federal regulations and laws
Several new policies are also being added

Kindergarten requirements
College/university credit programs
Supplemental education services
Student driver education guidelines
Sports injury management and concussions
Scheduling of instruction to enhance instructional programs
Requirements for school volunteers
Guidelines for determining awards based on class rankings
Credit recovery requirements
Student initiated prayer in schools

Board Business Meeting

Superintendent's Report

American Heart Association recognized for donating CPR training kits to all Orleans public high schools

New requirement for all HS students to learn CPR

Local public schools will be participating in Mardi Gras parades via bands and other marching groups
Lake Forest Charter Elementary School opened successfully in its new building

Superintendent was impressed by dedication of administration, faculty, and students in being engaged in learning
Lake Forest Charter was named one of Louisiana's two schools to be a 2015 National Title I Distinguished School

Approved the proposed GMP
Preparation for construction of new Karr High School
CORE Construction - GMP = $3,245,970

Phase I includes the following:

Perimeter fencing to secure site
Building and site remediation
Demolition of former Jo Ellen Smith Hospital and medical office buildings

National Wear Red Day - February 26, 2016

Passed Resolution 02-16 declaring Wear Red Day for OPSB

Amendment to Superintendent's contract

Deferred pending alignment of dates for key milestones to correspond with new test results release dates

Adoption of Revised OPSB Policy Section 1

Adopted the policies that were subject to the earlier Public Hearing

Lease of Lake Catherine Sixteenth Section

Approved the lease
By public bid - Ross Mestayer - $7,525 per year - 3 years
Leased for hunting rights

Approved the contract extensions
OPSB is pass through manager by federal law for federal funds designated for Orleans non-public schools
