The Orleans Parish School Board held its regular monthly Board Business Meeting  on January 19, 2016, in the Auditorium of the new McDonogh 35 High School, 4000 Cadillac Street. A Public Hearing on Policy Matters was held prior to the Business Meeting. Also, prior to both events, newly elected Board Member John A. Brown, Sr., was sworn in during a short ceremony.

  • Revised OPSB Policy Section I, Instruction
    • No one appeared to speak on any of the policies
    • Recoded and updated to align with state and federal regulations and laws
    • Several new policies are also being added

      • Supplemental education services
      • Student driver education guidelines
      • Sports injury management and concussions
      • Scheduling of instruction to enhance instructional programs
      • Requirements for school volunteers
      • Guidelines for determining awards based on class rankings

      • Student initiated prayer in schools

    • Guaranteed Maximum Price for demolition of former Jo Ellen Smith Medical Center - Phase 1
      • Approved the proposed GMP

      • Phase I includes the following:
        • Perimeter fencing to secure site
        • Building and site remediation
        • Demolition of former Jo Ellen Smith Hospital and medical office buildings
    • National Wear Red Day - February 26, 2016
      • Passed Resolution 02-16 declaring Wear Red Day for OPSB
    • Amendment to Superintendent's contract
      • Deferred pending alignment of dates for key milestones to correspond with new test results release dates
    • Adoption of Revised OPSB Policy Section 1
      • Adopted the policies that were subject to the earlier Public Hearing
    •  Lease of Lake Catherine Sixteenth Section
      • Approved the lease
      • By public bid - Ross Mestayer - $7,525 per year - 3 years
      • Leased for hunting rights 
      Third Party Contracts for Title II - Part A programs in non-public schools
      • Approved the contract extensions
      • OPSB is pass through manager by federal law for federal funds designated for Orleans non-public schools 
        • Catapult Learning - $970,948.27
        • Non-Public Educational Services - $33,265.17
