The Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) will receive Letters of Interest from qualified individuals seeking to fill its vacant District 1 seat on an interim basis. This is the seat vacant due to the resignation of Ira Thomas.

To be a school board member, one must be at least 18 years old, a resident in Louisiana for the preceding two years and domiciled for the preceding year in the district to which he or she is being appointed. A map of District 1 can be viewed here.

Pursuant to OPSB Policy A108, OPSB has ten (10) days in which to fill the vacancy, or the Governor will appoint a person to fill the vacancy. Therefore, the OPSB at its March 17, 2015, Board Business Meeting will appoint a qualified person to fill the vacant seat on an interim basis until a Special Election is held to fill the seat for the balance of the unexpired term.

If interested in serving, a person must submit the following by Thursday, March 12, 2015, 12:00 noon, addressed to Board President Seth Bloom, and, hand- delivered to the OPSB Board Office, 3520 General de Gaulle Drive, Suite 5055, New Orleans, Louisiana 70114:
  • Letter of Interest
  • Resume'
  • Affidavit of Qualifications [consistent with La. R.S. 17:52(E)]
  • Copy of a current Louisiana Driver's License (or other official Louisiana identification)
Although not mandatory, an interested person may also submit with the Letter of Interest a short Vision Statement responding to the following three questions:
  1. What is your vision for public education in New Orleans?
  2. What in your experience best qualifies you for this interim appointment?
  3. In your opinion, what does a "quality" school district look like?
