OPSB has announced the availability of vacant and surplus properties for interested charter school operators to visit next week. The announcement can be read
here. This round of vacant and surplus properties includes seven (7) former school buildings and nine (9) vacant sites.
Note: These viewings are for authorized charter operators only and not for the general public
State law requires that, prior to offering surplus schools for sale to the general public, school boards must allow charter schools the opportunity to acquire them. Therefore, charters now have the opportunity to view and express an interest in the available buildings.
All properties are sold "as is," so buyers should obtain all information available on the condition of the buildings prior to agreeing to a price. However, potential purchasers should still notify OPSB now of any interest, even before a formal offer would be made.
For sales of vacant tracts of land lacking a school building, there are conflicting interpretations of state law. Consequently, OPSB is awaiting an opinion from the Attorney General prior to offering these properties for sale. However, charters are notified that the properties might be available soon so that any interest in them may be expressed now.
Any charter interested in these or any other vacant OPSB properties should contact the Deputy Superintendent Kathleen Padian. Offers cannot be accepted unless and until OPSB has received recent appraisals for the desired properties.
