The Orleans Parish School Board held its regular, monthly
Committee Meetings on June 12 in OPSB's Timbers III Office Building, 3520 General DeGaulle Drive. Committees typically review issues which the full Board is expected to consider at a forthcoming Board Business Meeting and review the progress of the implementation of items previously approved by the full Board.
OPSBrief has summarized below the agenda items covered during those meetings. To review the entire agendas and back-up documentation, click on the title of each respective Committee.
The next OPSB Board Business Meeting is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17th, in the Auditorium of McDonogh 35 HS, 1331 Kerlerec Street. It is anticipated that a Public Hearing on policy maters will precede the Business Meeting at 4:30 p.m.

- Charter School Academic Performance Framework
- Received and discussed report from the Administration
- Failed to pass by majority vote a motion to approve the item
- Vote was 2 to approve with 2 abstentions.
- Some members offered opinions that the related policy amendments should be adopted first, before the framework
- Heard three comments from the public
- Rosylyn J. Smith, PhD, expressed belief that policy should come before framework, that all schools should not have same criteria because they have different communities to serve, and that all schools cannot be held to being above city-wide average
- CEO of Einstein Charter expressed appreciation for the Administration taking into consideration the situation of a successful school that takes over a failing school and needs a few years to get the taken-over school up to high-performing levels
- To do otherwise would be a disincentive for a successful school to take over a failing school
- Executive Director of the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools complimented the Administration on working with charters in developing the framework
- Technology Integration
- Received and discussed report from the Administration
- Follow-up to prior request by OPSB members for a study of bringing technology to students on an one-to-one basis

- Presently, the 2995 students in direct-run OPSB schools have school use of 2138 devices, not including computers for teacher use
- Devises = 1804 Windows 7 devices plus 334 iPads & Mac books
- Report includes cost of bringing number of state-of-the-art devices up to one-to-one ratio with take-home capability
- Report includes types of software and resources currently available and level of usage by students
- School 2014 LEAP and iLEAP Report for Grades 3-8
- Received and discussed report from Administration
- Test results reflect continued city-wide growth (OPSB and RSD)
- Across all grades tested, 82% of OPSB students scored "Basic" or better
- Statewide average = 69%
- City-wide average (OPSB + RSD-NO) = 61%
- For "high stakes" LEAP tests in Grades 4 and 8
- 91 % of OPSB 4th graders met promotional standards without remediation
- 83% of OPSB 8th graders met promotional standards without remediation
- Achievement levels getting higher as 42% of OPSB students achieved at "Mastery" or "Advanced" levels
- Ranked 2nd in State (24%)
