On Thursday, February 13, RSD Superintendent Patrick Dobard was interviewed by The Lens as part of its "Breakfast with the Newsmakers" program at the Basin St. Station, 501 Basin Street at St. Louis Street.
The event was open to the public. The video of the hour-long interview can be viewed at The Lens website.
Superintendent Dobard discussed the Recovery School District's long-term vision for schools in New Orleans and other parts of the state, including RSD's academic progress, the phase-out of direct-run schools, the closure of the charter at John McDonogh High School, the Landry-Walker merger, the potential return of RSD schools to OPSB, and other key items.
Some of the key points coming from the interview include the following:
-
When schools are determined to be failing, communities should have a sense of urgency about reforming the schools in order to retain local control and prevent an RSD take-over.
-
Regarding community engagement and participation, "people" and the "public" are terms that too often refer to a narrow special interest rather than to the general population of parents seeking good schools for their children - the involvement of the same people over and over is not effective participation
-
By improving RSD schools, the percentage of students eligible for TOPS has almost quadrupled
-
The "bar" must be continually raised and reflect continuing higher expectations
-
Key operating concepts are Accountability, Autonomy and Choice
-
Equity is a key focus - we must address needs of students underserved now, such as children with special needs
-
Equity is difficult to achieve when funds are harder to find for social services and mental health services
